Cal men roll to first victory

CALIFORNIA – Senior Chris Williams made seven of eight shots from the field and scored a game-high 17 points as California University’s men’s basketball team won its first game of season, rolling over Penn State-Greater Allegheny, 83-49, Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.

California (1-2) shot 49 percent from the field in the first half, forging a commanding 47-22 lead at intermission. Penn State-Greater Allegheny (0-3) used only seven players and committed 23 turnovers. Cal, which had 11 players score, held a 30-2 edge in bench scoring.

Tynell Fortune scored 16 points for Cal, which led by as many as 36 points in the second half.

Nick Dizon and Aaron Byrd each scored 13 points for PSU-Greater Allegheny with 13 points. Petrie Addison scored 12 points but also had 12 turnovers.

The Vulcans are idle until Nov. 20 when they begin PSAC play at Gannon.

Women’s result

Fairmont State 67, California 61: Makenzie White made 14 of 16 free throws and scored 20 points as Fairmont State pulled away in the closing seconds for a 67-61 victory over visiting California in a non-conference game.

The contest was tight throughout as neither team led by more than six points. Fairmont State (2-0) took the lead for good at 58-56 on a layup by Hailey Garret with four minutes remaining. The Falcons pushed their lead to six points with two minutes left before Cal (0-2) made one final charge.

Three free throws by Miki Glenn and a driving layup by Ashley Hines cut the Falcons’ lead to 62-61 with 47 seconds to play. The Vulcans had a chance to take the lead but missed a three-pointer with six seconds left. The Falcons then scored five points in the final four seconds.

Garrett scored 12 points for FSU, and Emily Lohr, Hallie Gunnoe and Brianna Innocent each had 10.

Emma Mahady scored a game-high 23 points for Cal. Glenn scored 10 points, and Elena Antonenko had 10 points and eight rebounds.
