McGloin remaining as starter
ALAMEDA, Calif. — Matt McGloin’s rapid ascent from undrafted rookie free agent could lead to him becoming the regular starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders.
McGloin, a Penn State product, threw three touchdown passes against Houston in his first career start as he led the Raiders to their first road victory of the season, earning himself serious consideration for a shot to take over the starting role from Terrelle Pryor.
Coach Dennis Allen wasn’t ready to announce a decision Monday about who would start this week against Tennessee because he wants to talk to Pryor to determine the status of his injured right knee.
Texans sticking with Keenum: Texans coach Gary Kubiak is sticking with Case Keenum as his starter despite pulling the quarterback late in Houston’s latest loss.
Keenum will start on Sunday as the Texans try to snap a franchise-record eight-game skid at home against Jacksonville on Sunday.
“I’ve got total confidence in him,” Kubiak said.
Two draw suspensions from NFL: Colts linebacker Erik Walden’s head-butt and Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson’s helmet-to-helmet hit have earned one-game suspensions from the NFL.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks announced the punishments Monday.
Washington tackle says official swore at him: The Washington Redskins and the NFL are reviewing an incident in which a game official allegedly directed profane words at left tackle Trent Williams.
“You just can’t use that type of language to get your point across,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said.
Williams said he was called vulgar names by official No. 81 – which would be umpire Roy Ellison – during a Redskins possession late in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Other players say they heard the words as well, and a replay shows Ellison gesturing at Williams while walking backward just before a snap, with Williams, quarterback Robert Griffin III and tight end Niles Paul turning to look back at Ellison.
Special investigator will look at Dolphins: The NFL’s special investigator looking into the Miami Dolphins’ harassment case says the team has been cooperative in preparing for his visit this week.
New York attorney Ted Wells released a statement Monday, his first public comments about the investigation. He plans to interview the Dolphins beginning Monday.
Broncos claim AFC’s top spot: The Denver Broncos stamped themselves as the AFC’s top team by ending Kansas City’s perfect run.
Peyton Manning threw for 323 yards and a touchdown Sunday night and was barely touched by Kansas City’s sack-happy defense in Denver’s 27-17 victory. The Broncos (9-1) tied the Chiefs atop the AFC West. Denver holds the tiebreaker, but the teams meet again in two weeks.
