Gannon drops Cal in PSAC opener

Adam Blazrek scored 20 points and Gannon held California to only 15 field goals en route to a 59-51 victory over the Vulcans in a PSAC opener Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center in Erie.
Gannon (1-0, 1-0) forged a 28-22 lead at halftime and matained an advantage throughout the second half. The Vulcans did pull to within two points midway through the half, but Gannon protected its lead by making 15 of 20 free throws.
Cal (0-1, 1-3) shot only 31 percent from the field and made more three-pointers (8) thasn two-point field goals (7).
Chris Williams led the Vulcans with 14 points, and Arman Marks followed with 10 points and seven rebounds. Cal forced 21 Gannon turnovers, but the Golden Knights held a 37-22 edge in rebounds.
Women’s result
Gannon 73, California 64: Brittany Batts scored a game-high 19 points and Gannon used a huge advantage at the free-throw line to defeat California, 73-64, at the Hammermill Center in the PSAC opener for both teams.
It was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final.
Gannon (0-3) remained undefeated while California is winless in four games. The Vulcans had more field goals (22-19) than Gannon and made nine three-pointers compared to only three by the hosts. But Gannon made 32 of 45 free throws compared to only 11-for-17 by California.
Gannon led 35-33 at halftime, then used a 9-0 run over a five-minute stretch of the second half to push the advantage to 52-36 with 10:56 remaining. Cal battled back and pulled to within 65-59 after a jumper by Chelsea McKnight with 48 seconds to play.
Gannon, however, secured the win with some torrid free-throw shooting. The Golden Knights made 11 of 12 free throws in the final 64 seconds.
Jen Papich scored 14 points for Gannon, Kelley Sundberg had 13 and Nettie Blake 12.
Freshman Miki Glenn paced a balanced Cal scoring attack with 13 points. Elena Antonenko had 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
