Bellhy’s double-double sends W&J to third victory

Washington & Jefferson’s Nate Bellhy had a big game, and the Presidents shot a blistering 53 percent from the field, en route to an 88-73 victory over visiting Penn State-Fayette in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Henry Memorial Center.

Bellhy, a junior forward, had a double-double with game-highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds, leading the Presidents (3-1) to their second win of the week.

W&J, which raced a 46-29 lead at halftime, received 14 points from Mitch Locher and 13 from Doug Johnson. The Presidents used 12 players and 10 scored at least two points. W&J dominated the boards, outrebounding Penn State-Fayette 44-23. The Roaring Lions had only three offensive rebounds.

Penn State-Fayette (1-5) had four players in doduble figures, led by Dierre Jenkins’ 16 points.

Waynesburg 78, Franciscan 69: Jacob Fleegle scored 19 points and Waynesburg took control of the game midway through the second half as the Yellow Jackets defeated host Franciscan 78-69 in a non-conference game.

Waynesburg (3-1) led by one point at halftime, but Franciscan took a 56-52 advantage with 11:39 remaining. Waynesburg then put together an 11-0 run to open a 63-56 lead. Kenny Klase had five of his 14 points during the pivotal stretch and capped the run with a three-pointer.

Franciscan (1-2) never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Jason Propst and Thomas Ellis each scored 14 points for Waynesburg, which won despite making only 19 of 39 free throws. The Yellow Jackets did control the boards, outrebounding Franciscan 51-35.

Timmy Schenk and Justin Hortsman each had 11 points for the Barons.

Slippery Rock 74, California 55: Josh Martin scored 20 points and Slippery Rock remained undefeated in PSAC play with a 74-55 victory over California at the Convocation Center.

Slippery Rock forged a commanding 36-19 lead at halftime as Cal (0-2, 1-4) suffered through a poor-shooting half in which they shot only 24 percent (7-for-29) from the field. For the game, Cal shot 29 percent.

Kelvin Dixon scored 16 points for The Rock (2-0, 4-1), which led by as many as 25 points.

Tynell Fortune and Alonzo Murphy provided the bulk of Cal’s offense. Fortune scored 20 points and had three assists, and Murphy tossed in 17 points and blocked four shots.

Women’s results

California 79, Slippery Rock 52: California held visiting Slippery Rock to only 19 second-half points and the Vulcans pulled away for their first victory of the season, 79-52.

California (1-1 PSAC West, 1-4 overall) led 42-33 at halftime before holding Slippery Rock (0-2, 0-5) to six field goals and 23 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

Freshman Miki Glenn had a big game for the Vulcans with a game-high 23 points and a team-highs of nine rebounds and six assists. Irina Kukolj contributed 15 points and eight rebounds, and Chelsea McKnight had 14 points.

D’Asia Chambers led The Rock with 14 points and Aidan Geise had 11.

Denison 91, Waynesburg 69: Kellie Arter scored 21 points and Denison rolled to a 91-69 victory over cold-shooting Waynesburg in the consolation of the M-Club tournament at Mount Union.

Waynesburg, which has opened the season with four consecutive losses, shot only 27 percent in the first half and fell behind 37-22 at halftime.

Denison (4-1) shot 53 percent for the game. Gretchen Staubach scored 17 points and Jordan Holmes had 11 for the Big Red.

Heather Davis paced Waynesburg with 17 points, which included five three-point field goals, and Lauren Blair had 10 points.
