SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources say tests show DNA from Asian carp has been found in water samples collected from the Ohio River.
Federal wildlife agents tested river samples between Wheeling and Pittsburgh last month.
The Asian carp and other invasive species threaten native species and can put a dent in the dollars raised by recreational activities. State wildlife officials say Asian carp have a voracious appetite and reproduce quickly.
To prevent the spread of the fish, the state wildlife division is asking those who use state waters not to transfer the fish or any other aquatic species. Anglers and boaters are encouraged to thoroughly clean gear and boats before entering new waters and to learn more about native species to distinguish them from invasive, unwanted species.
