James Calvert scored with just under nine minutes remaining in the second half to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 2-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Westminster Saturday.

Cody Peddicord also scored for the Presidents (1-0, 6-4), his third goal of the season.

Ethan McCarthy scored his seven goal of the season for Westminster (0-1, 5-7).

The Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team had their five-game winning streak come to an abrupt end on Saturday with a 1-0 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Westminster.

In the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener, W&J did not lack scoring opportunities, posting 15 shots on goal, but Westminster’s Kerri Inzinga’s goal in the ninth minute made the difference.

The Presidents (0-1, 5-5) were led by junior Jess Skovira, who posted four shots against Westminster (1-0, 6-5) goalkeepereer Maddie Frech. Frech stopped nine shots in the game, as Washington & Jefferson senior Holly Shipley’s six-game point streak came to an end.

Washington & Jefferson’s field hockey team could not overcome an early offensive onslaught by St. John Fisher as the Presidents lost, 3-0, in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Saturday.

St. John Fisher got two in the first half from Elizabeth Cusack. W&J sophomore goalie Kira Bunker posted 12 saves in the first half, but the Presidents (1-2, 8-4) could not overcome the early deficit.

Trinity’s boys soccer team dropped a high-scoring matchup against the Obama Academy of International Studies 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Preston Kulla scored two goals for the Hillers (4-6, 6-8), while Jimmy Viechek added another, but Obama Academy’s offense was relentless. Ray Cascio scored two goals for the academy, while Abe Kovayate, Zack Lardis, Yoka Rooney and Eli Biamonte also added goals for the Soaring Eagles (4-7, 6-7).

Chartiers Houston (4-7, 7-9) was eliminated from playoff contention after losing 7-0 against Serra Catholic in a Section 2-A matchup on Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have completed their trade for Justin Morneau by sending right-handed pitcher Duke Welker to the Minnesota Twins.

The final portion of the Aug. 31 trade was announced on Saturday. The Pirates sent outfielder Alex Presley and a player to be named later to the Twins for Morneau to give them some extra pop at the plate and a reliable defensive first baseman.

The 27-year-old Welker went 3-4, with a 3.57 ERA and nine saves in 48 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He appeared in two games for the Pirates this season, pitching 1 1-3 scoreless innings. He has a career minor league record of 16-39 with a 4.19 ERA. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the second round in 2007.
