WILLIAMSPORT (AP) – The parents of a seventh-grade central Pennsylvania girl say she’s being denied the opportunity to wrestle on the middle school team because of her gender.

PennLive.com said Brian and Angie Beattie of Herndon filed suit Tuesday in U.S. Middle District Court to force the Line Mountain School District to let their daughter wrestle.

The suit states the girl, identified only as A.B., began wrestling in third grade and practiced and competed against boys in fourth and fifth grade with the LeMars, Iowa, wrestling club.

After the family moved to Pennsylvania, the girl participated in meets and tournaments as a member of a youth wrestling club.

The lawsuit said the school district’s prohibition of girls from participating in boys’ contact sports is unconstitutional.
