Santino Paris passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score as Avella opened its football season with a 37-8 victory over host Vincentian in a non-conference game Saturday night.

Paris opened the scoring with a 13-yard TD pass to Walt Kopko and added a 14-yarder to Joey Yates that gave the Eagles a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.

Paris, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 134 yards, had a one-yard touchdown run later in the first half.

Nick Kusich rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 13 and one yards, and Shawen Carl kicked a 30-yard field goal for the Eagles.

Canevin defeated Carlynton 1-0 in a shootout to win the Chartiers-Houston Soccer Tournament Sunday.

Chartiers-Houston won the third-place match, 5-0 over South Side Beaver. Jessica Blumen scored two goals and Erin James, Carly Wilson and Hannah Mobley each added one goal. Alyson Ferrari had three assists.

Mobley and Hannah Burns combined on the shutout for the Bucs (1-1).

• Belle Vernon won the South Fayette Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 victory over South Fayette. Springdale shut out Waynesburg in the consolation games. No further information was available.

South Fayette won its own season-opening tournament with a 2-0 victory over Moon. Ed Terrell scored a first-half goal and Brian Coyne iced the match with a goal in the second half.

Alex Gedrys and Andrew Pine combined for the shutout for SF (2-0). Moon is 1-1.

• Canon-McMillan won two matches in its season-opening soccer tournament, stopping North Hills, 3-0, and McGuffey 4-0.

Against North Hills, Jake Wilcox had two goals and Nick Sodini added one. Josh Kruczek had an assist.

Against McGuffey, Sodini and Wilcox each had a goal and assist, Joe Chirumbolo scored a goal and Ivan Viveras had a goal and two assists. Christian Snatchko recorded the shutout.

Brian Hanna’s goal in the seventh minute lifted the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team to a 1-0 season opening win over Mount Aloysius late Saturday night at Alexandre Stadium.

Hanna’s strike came at the 7:54 mark of the first half. The junior forward slid into an accurate pass in front of the net off the foot of classmate Chris Watson.

Junior midfielder Catherine Beaudoin netted a pair of goals as Washington & Jefferson improved to 2-0 following a 5-1 victory over Oberlin at Cameron Stadium. The Presidents are 2-0 for the second consecutive season. Last year, W&J won its first five matches.

Rocco Mediate ran away with the inaugural Shaw Charity Classic Sunday for his second victory in 17 starts in his first Champions Tour season.

The 50-year-old Mediate, the Allianz Championship winner in February in his first Champions Tour start, closed with a 7-under 64 at tree-lined Canyon Meadows for a seven-stroke victory.

Mediate opened with a 63 and had a 64 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round. The six-time PGA Tour winner finished at 22-under 191, playing the back nine in 18 under, to tie the tour record for lowest total score in a 54-hole event.

• Sergio Garcia started with the lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship and shot 65. And he needed just about every birdie. On a course softened by rain that caused a re-start of the third round Sunday, Garcia two-putted for birdie on the 18th hole to take a two-shot lead over Henrik Stenson into the final round.

• Trevor Immelman rallied to win the Hotel Fitness Championship at Sycamore Hills to lock up a PGA Tour card in the Web.com Tour Finals opener. Immelman, the South African who won the 2008 Masters, birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke victory over Cantlay.

Todd Helton doubled for his 2,500th career hit, Michael Cuddyer homered among his four hits and the Colorado Rockies overcame the loss of starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-4.

• Nathan Eovaldi combined with Steve Cishek on an eight-hit shutout, Jeff Mathis homered and drove in three runs, and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 7-0 to end their six-game losing streak.

• Mike Aviles hit a grand slam in the ninth inning that lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

• Zack Greinke allowed one run over seven innings, Yasiel Puig homered in the sixth and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 to complete a three-game sweep.
