Baseball: Cal ends skid, gains split

The California University baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak by scoring a season-high 16 runs in Game 2 Tuesday afternoon that earned a 16-5 victory and a split of a doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown.

Cal lost the opener, 2-1.

Cal moves to 14-12 this season with a 3-7 mark in divisional play. The doubleheader marked the first meeting between the two programs since the 2003 season.

Cal pounded out 18 hits in the second game, with Chuck Gasti going 4-for-4, scoring three runs and knocking in two. Justin Taylor homered and drove in four runs, and Joe Yourgal homered and drove in four runs for Cal.

In the opener, Corey Craig was the loser. Matt Peters had an RBI-single for Cal.

Ryan Bills gave up one run in six innings to pick up the win.

• Jared Baird and Kyle McLain combined on a two-hit shutout to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 3-0 victory over Westminster in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Josh Staniscia had three hits and stole three bases in Game 2 as W&J completed its second-straight league sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Titans.

The Baird-McLain duo helped the W&J pitching staff stretch its unearned run streak to 25 1/3 innings. Baird did not allow a hit until Sean Coyne’s infield single with two outs in the sixth inning.

W&J (11-7, 6-1 PAC) has won five consecutive games.
