College Sports: Waynesburg splits with Grove City

Burgettstown’s Brian Resnik threw a four-hit shutout as Waynesburg split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader with Grove City, winning the opener, 3-0, before dropping the nightcap, 3-0.

Eric Crum and Ben Shorthouse each doubled for Waynesburg (10-9, 14-21) in the opener. Erick Locker threw a five-hit shutout for Grove City (6-12, 8-19) in the nightcap.

Waynesburg High School graduate Colton Lippencott threw six innings of shutout relief for Waynesburg after Grove City scored three runs off of starter Connor Furwa in the first inning.

• Peters Township graduate Mike Bittel scattered four hits over six innings in the opening game of a PSAC doubleheader Saturday, as Seton Hill swept California, 5-1 and 6-5.

Bittel allowed just one run for Seton Hill (20-6, 34-14), which got home runs from Cody Herald, Chris Miller and Nick Sell.

Sell’s RBI single in the bottom of seventh lifted Seton Hill to victory in the nightcap.

Mick Fennell, David Marcus and Matt Peters all doubled for California (12-14, 25-20).

Krista McCartney pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as Washington & Jefferson College won the opening game of a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s softball doubleheader, 3-2, earning a split when Bethany won the nightcap, 4-0, Saturday.

Courtney Roperti had a two-run single for the Presidents (13-5, 21-9) in the bottom of the fifth inning to push them ahead and clinch third place in next week’s PAC tournament at Thomas More. W&J will play No. 2 seed Geneva.

Kadie Kelly homered for Bethany (10-8, 18-22).

Kelsey Bish, who pitched in both games, threw a four-hitter in the nightcap.

• Lindsay Reicoff hit a pair of home runs in the opener, and the Vulcans hit six in the doubleheader, earning a PSAC sweep of Slippery Rock, 11-1 and 11-3 in a pair of five-inning games.

Shelby Lia added a three-run homer for the Vulcans (22-0, 29-4) in the opener, while Alex Sagl improved to 18-2 with the win.

California, which has won 25 consecutive games, the longest streak in NCAA Division II, has clinched first place in the PSAC West.

Breanna Morris, Shelby Heyd and Megan Jahoda homered in the nightcap.

McKenzie Popatak had two RBI for Slippery Rock (11-13, 16-23).

• Carrie Maier threw a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts as Waynesburg topped Chatham, 1-0, in a PAC doubleheader, with the Yellow Jackets also taking the nightcap, 5-1.

Ashley DeMarco’s RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth scored Emily Sorton for the lone run in the opener for Waynesburg, which finishes its season at 6-12 and 10-22.

Anne Marie Brnardic allowed just five hits in the loss for Chatham (2-14, 6-17).

Bentworth’s Jessica Dorazio had two hits and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap.

Geoff Harty scored five goals to lead the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to a 14-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a men’s Landmark Conference lacrosse match Saturday.

Tim Angell had three goals for the Presidents (0-6, 5-11).

Troy Smith added three goals for the Merchant Marine Academy (2-4, 8-6).

Washington & Jefferson coach Chris Faulk became the first person to win PAC player of the year and coach of the year honors Saturday when he was named the conference’s top coach following the completion of the men’s tennis tournament at Erie.

Faulk won the player of the year honors in 2010.

Grove City won its 25th consecutive men’s tennis title, with Saint Vincent finishing second and W&J third.

Saint Vincent shot a score of 312 Saturday to clinch its second consecutive men’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference golf championship Saturday at Cedarbrook Golf Club.

Saint Vincent finished with a four-day total of 1,211 to edge Washington & Jefferson by 17 strokes.

Waynesburg finished seventh.

Thomas More’s Mike Marcagi was the medalist, shooting a 73 for a two-day total of 150, one shot ahead of W&J’s Hunter Bagiatis.
