Girls basketball roundup: Wash High rallies, wins in OT

Tajah Gordon scored five of her game-high 18 points in overtime as Washington rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Mohawk 48-44 in overtime in the Freeport tournament Friday night.

The Prexies will play either Freeport or Knoch in tonight’s 7 p.m. championship game.

Mohawk forged a 15-4 lead after one quarter and led 26-14 at halftime. The Prexies, however, powered by the scoring of Gordon and Emmalea Beck (nine points) battled back and outscored Mohawk 15-7 in the fourth quarter. A Wash High basket with 45 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 37-37 and forced overtime, which the Prexies dominated by outscoring the Warriors 11-7.

Samantha Carr led Mohawk with 14 points and Erin Giancola had 10.

McGuffey 72, Steel Valley 25: Sammie Weiss scored 31 points and had six steals as McGuffey won its game in the opening round of the Montour tournament, 72-25, over Steel Valley.

Rachel Czulewicz added 14 points, while Carae Wagner had 12 for the Highlanders (1-0). Lauren Crimm had 14 rebounds.

Morgan Farrah had 10 points for Steel Valley (0-1).

Trinity 71, Saltsburg 38: Sierra Kotchman’s 23 points led Trinity to a 71-38 victor over Saltsburg in the opening round of the Greensburg Salem tournament.

Mary Dunn added 16 points for the Hillers (1-0), who led 31-13 at the half.

Amanda Peace had 14 points to lead Saltsburg (0-1).

Brownsville 60, Chartiers-Houston 39: Allie Seto’s 20 points helped Brownsville top Chartiers-Houston, 60-39, at the Brownsville tournament.

Mavis Seto added 17 points for Brownsville (1-0).

Alexa Williamson scored 19 points to lead Char-Houston (0-1), which plays South Allegheny at 1 p.m. today.

Carmichaels 39, Monessen 29: Senior guard Caroline Cree scored a game-high 22 points and Carmichaels advanced to the championship game of the Charleroi tournament with a 39-29 victory over Monessen.

Carmichaels led 14-6 after one quarter, then failed to score in the second quarter and went into halftime tied 14-14. The Mikes held a five-point edge in each of the remaining quarters.

Cree scored 10 of her points at the free-throw line, where Carmichaels went 11-for-18. Monessen, which received 18 points from Teraee Bradford, made only four of 13 free throws.

Montour 59, Fort Cherry 28: Montour used two big quarters to defeat Fort Cherry 59-28 in the Spartans’ tournament.

Montour outscored the Rangers 21-4 in the first quarter and 21-10 in the third.

Jane Scheicher scored a game-high 18 points for Montour and Maura Hickey followed with 16.

Fort Cherry was led by Hannah Greene, who scored 11 points. The Rangers will play Central Valley today (4:30 p.m.).

Jefferson-Morgan 49, Waynesburg 36: Kayla Yorko and Ally Bodgen combined for 29 points as Jefferson-Morgan opened the season with a 49-36 victory over host Waynesburg.

York scored a game-high 17 points for the Rockets, who led by only 16-14 at halftime. Bogden followed with 12 points for J-M.

Kirsten Garber paced Waynesburg with 15 points and Celine Monica contributed 11.

Canon-McMillan 63, Keystone Oaks 33: Cheyenne Trest poured in a career-high 22 points to pace Canon-McMillan to a 63-33 victory over Keystone Oaks in the Belle Vernon tournament.

Danielle Parker and Rebecca Turney each had a double-double. Turney scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds and Parker scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Lexi Mercuri paced Keystone Oaks, which trailed 39-19, with 11 points.

Charleroi 63, Belle Vernon 20: Three players scored in double figures to help Charleroi defeat Clairton, 63-20, in the Charleroi tournament.

Aislyn Lee led the way with 16 points, Sierra Short had 14, and Kaitlyn Riley 12 points. Charleroi plays Carmichaels in the finals at 5:30 p.m.

Mars 71, California 49: Mars outscored California in each quarter on the way to a 71-49 victory in the Slippery Rock tournament.

Mars led 35-22 at halftime and outscored Cal 38-27 over the final two quarters. Ali Goetz led Mars with 20 points.

Lyndsey Huhn and Bailey Vig each scored 12 points and Kat Pankratz added 10 for Cal. Cal plays either Valley or Slippery Rock in the 4 p.m. consolation game.

Ringgold 55, Central Valley 27: Ringgold held Central Valley in single digits each of the four quarters on the way to a 55-27 victory in the Montour Tipoff Tournament.

Ashley Briscoe led the way for the Rams with 24 points and Marlena Schmidt had 10 points. Ringgold plays McGuffey at 4:30 p.m.

Krista Sudar scored 18 points to pace Central Valley.

Burgettstown 52, Bentworth 40: Michaela Bertovich and Kacie Crasco combined for 35 points to lead Burgettstown to a 52-40 victory over Bentworth at the Avella Tip-off Tournament.

Bertovich had 18 points and Crasko had 17 for the Blue Devils, who plays either Mapletown or Avella in the 7:30 p.m. finals.

Burgettstown outscored Bentworth 21-7 in the fourth quarter thanks to Crasko hitting 10 of 11 free throws and Bertovich two three-pointers.

Reilly Skerbetz had 13 points and Grace Marchezak 12 for Bentworth.

Avella 47, Mapletown 36: Grace Lengauer scored a game-high 18 points to power Avella to a 47-36 victory over Mapletown in the Avella tournament.

The start of the game was delayed for about an hour because of a power outage.

Jade Georgetti added nine points for Avella, which plays Burgettstown in tonight’s 7:30 p.m. title game.

Abby Shipley and Rachel Buchtan each scored eight points for Mapletown, which plays Bentworth in the 4 p.m. consolation game. Buchtan also had 10 rebounds.

Clay-Battelle 62, West Greene 8: Three players scored in double figures as Clay-Battelle toppled West Greene, 62-8, in the Waynesburg tournament.

Hayley Jones led the way with 19 points, Hayley Barr had 17 and Abby Ammons chipped in 15 for Clay-Battelle.

Marissa Rode’s five points lead West Greene, which plays Waynesburg at 8 p.m.
