Jackets pull away, topple Grove City

Jason Propst led four Waynesburg players in double figures with 15 points and the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half to defeat Grove City, 70-55, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The win was the first in conference play for Waynesburg (1-1, 2-5). The Yellow Jackets held a 25-24 lead at halftime but start the second half with an 8-0 flurry. Waynesburg later put together a 14-3 run that pushed its lead to 47-31. Grove City never trimmed the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
Thomas Ellis scored 10 of his 14 points for Waynesburg during the second half. Kenny Klase scored 12 points and DJ Ritchie had 10. The Yellow Jackets shot 68 percent from the field in the second half.
Grove City (1-1, 4-3) was led by Mitch Marmelstein, who scored 13 points.
Clarion 80, California 73: Darius Stevens and Brandon Williams each scored 18 points as Clarion evened its overall record by holding off California, 80-74, in a PSAC West Division game.
Kyheim Hill scored 17 points and B.J. Andrews had 12 for Clarion (1-2, 3-3), which trailed 34-32 at halftime but took advantage of huge advantage at the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles made 24 of 36 free throws, including 16 of 26 in the second half. Cal (2-2, 6-3) was 12-for-21 at the line for the game.
The Vulcans’ Richard Smith was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Khlil Jabbie scored 19 points and had seven assists.
Women’s results
California 72, Clarion 61 Emma Mahady scored 14 of her team-high 19 points in the second half as California pulled away over the final 20 minutes to defeat host Clarion 72-61 in a PSAC West Division game.
Cal (4-0, 7-1) won its third in a row and did it by erasing a four-point deficit early in the second half. The Vulcans led 37-34 at halftime before Clarion (0-3, 1-6), which received a game-high 22 points from Tania Holmes, gained the lead.
The Vulcans then charged back behind Mahady, used a 22-8 run to forge a 64-53 lead and then protected the advantage down the stretch.
Kaitlynn Fratz scored 13 points and had eight assists for Cal. Miki Glenn played all 40 minutes and scored 10 points.
Deinka Jones-Carey had 16 points for Clarion and Hannah Heeter scored 12.
Wash & Jeff 70, Chatham 48: Beka Bellhy scored 13 points and Washington & Jefferson cruised to a 70-48 victory over host Chatham in a PAC game.
The win moves W&J to 2-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall. The Presidents raced to a 47-21 lead at halftime.
W&J used 17 players in the game and 14 scored at least two points. Valerie Dunlap was the only player other than Bellhy to reach double figures as she scored 10.
Chatham (1-2, 3-5) received 13 points from Megan Sieng. The Cougars committed only eight turnovers compared to W&J’s 15 but shot just 23 percent from the field.
Grove City 65, Waynesburg 64: Jackie Stewart came off the bench to score 14 points, including a game-winning jumper with 13 seconds left, as Grove City pulled out a 65-64 victory over host Waynesburg in a PAC game.
Grove City (1-1, 2-4) led by double figures in both the first and second half, then saw Waynesburg (0-2, 2-5) storm back with a 13-3 run and take a 64-63 lead after a layup by Rebecca Kerr with 31 seconds remaining.
After Stewart put Grove City back in the lead, Waynesburg had the final possession but Kerr missed a shot with one seconds to play.
Kathryn Erbelding scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Grove City, which forged a quick double-digit lead before Waynesburg cut the Wolverines’ advantage to 33-31 at halftime. Grove City started the second half with a flurry and led 58-43 with 6:56 remaining. The Wolverines still led, 60-51, with 3:50 to play when Waynesburg started its late charge.
Haley Delaney led a balanced Waynesburg attack with 13 points. Hayden Giuliani followed with 12 points, and Kerr and Addy Knetzer each had 11. Knetzer grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. The Yellow Jackets were unable to overcome 26 turnovers.
