J-M girls remain unbeaten; Mapletown on hot streak

Kayla Yorko had 13 points and Jefferson-Morgan closed the game with a 14-4 run to remain unbeaten with a 45-34 win over Fort Cherry Monday night in a Section 3-A girls basketball game.

Ally Bogden added 11 points and Nikki Venick chipped in 10 for the Rockets (2-0, 5-0), who broke open a close game by making eight free throws in the final quarter. The Rockets were 18 of 22 at the line.

Hannah Green had 12 points and Tina Bellhy 11 for Fort Cherry (1-1, 1-3).

Mapletown 44, West Greene 14: Mapletown went on a 13-0 run to open the second half and win its second consectuive game, 44-14, over West Greene in a Section 3-A game.

The back-to-back wins are the first for the Maples since Jan., 2009, when they defeated Jefferson-Morgan and West Greene.

Taylor Vanata, Madison Bogden and Lauren Sanetrik all scored eight points to lead the Maples (2-0, 2-3), who defeated Avella in their last game.

Marissa Rode had 11 points for West Greene (0-2, 0-6).

Bentworth 52, Waynesburg 39: Grace Marchezak had 22 points as Bentworth jumped out to a 12-3 lead and outlasted Waynesburg, 52-39, in a Section Heather Chester added 13 points for the Bearcats (1-1, 3-2).

Celine Monica had 18 points and Kirsten Garber added 13 for Waynesburg (0-2, 1-4).

Washington 38, Carmichaels 26: Mikala Maltony scored five of her eight points in an 11-0 third quarter run as Washington defeated Carmichaels, 38-26, in a Section 4-AA game.

Emmalea Beck and Tajah Gordon also had eight points for the Prexies (2-0, 3-2), who won despite being outscored 10-2 in the second quarter.

Caroline Cree had 15 points for the Mikes (0-1, 2-3).

California 59, Avella 18: Lyndsey Huhn had 11 points and California began the game with a 15-2 first quarter as the Trojans defeated Avella, 59-18, in a Section 3-A game.

Kat Pankratz had 10 points for California (2-0, 4-1).

Joelle Gossett led Avella (0-2 1-4) with seven points.

Geibel Catholic 40, Monessen 20: Karly Judy had 10 points as Geibel Catholic defeated Monessen, 40-20, in a Section 3-A game.

The Gators (1-1, 2-1) did not allow more than six points in a quarter in the game.

Sidney Fincik and Cara Grogan had five points each for Monessen (0-2, 1-3).

McGuffey 78, Montour 51: McGuffey bounced back from its first loss of the season by rolling over host Montour, 78-51, in Section 5-AAA. It was the first section win for the Highlanders since they moved up to Class AAA.

Sammie Weiss led four McGuffey players scoring in double figures with a game-high 27 points. Carae Wagner followed with 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, Rachel Czulewicz had 11 points and Lauren Crimm tossed in 10 points and had 10 rebounds.

McGuffey (1-1, 4-1) raced to a 47-26 lead at halftime.

Montour (0-1, 2-2) was led by Jane Scheicher’s 25 points.

Burgettstown 61, Wilkinsburg 20: Burgettstown used two huge quarters to roll over visiting Wilkinsburg 61-20 in Section 3-AA.

The Blue Devils (1-0, 5-1) forged a 23-2 lead after one quarter and outscored Wlkinsburg (0-2, 1-5) 23-5 in the third quarter.

Sophomore Darian Transue led four Burgettstown players in double figures with 14 points. Katie Tarr had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Michaela Bertovich and freshman Malia Castellino each scored 11 points.

Canon-McMillan 70, West Allegheny 43: Canon-McMillan moved to 2-0 in Section 4-AAAA with a 70-43 victory at West Allegheny.

Danielle Parker and Cheyenne Trest combined to score 38 points for the Big Macs (4-1 overall), who have won three in a row. Parker scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Trest scored 18 points. Rebecca Turney scored 11 points and had a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Big Macs took control early, forging a 16-4 lead after one quarter. West Allegheny (0-2, 3-2) was held to 11 field goals.

Chartiers-Houston 66, Brentwood 44: Jala Youngblood scored 10 of her 20 points in the pivotal third quarter to spark Chartiers-Houston to a 66-44 victory over host and previously undefeated Brentwood in Section 3-AA.

Chartiers-Houston (2-0, 3-1) led 27-19 at halftime, then took firm control of the game by outscoring Brentwood 24-12 in the third quarter.

Jalynn Myers scored 17 points for the Bucs and Jules Vulcano contributed 12. Alexa Williams had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Brentwood is 0-1 in section and 3-1 overall.

In other games:

Ringgold pulled out a 31-29 victory over visiting Thomas Jefferson in Section 4-AAA, Peters Township lost a Section 4-AAAA game at Bethel Park, 42-27, and Charleroi lost at Frazier, 55-41, in Section 4-AA. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
