When Trinity narrowly missed the WPIAL Class AAA football playoffs with a loss to Ringgold in the regular season finale Oct. 24, it marked the final game of Ryan Coyle’s tenure as the Hillers’ head coach.

Multiple sources confirmed to the Observer-Reporter Coyle informed his players Friday afternoon he resigned as coach at Trinity.

Trinity principal Donald Snoke declined to comment, directing questions to Dr. Michael Lucas, the school district’s superintendent. Lucas did not return phone calls this week. Coyle also did not respond to voicemails and text messages seeking comment.

No action will be taken on the resignation until Trinity’s next school board meeting, which is scheduled for Jan. 8.

In three seasons at Trinity, Coyle amassed a 10-18 record with a playoff appearance in 2012. The Hillers missed the playoffs this past season with a 3-5 record in the Big Nine Conference and 4-5 overall record.

Coyle spent six years as an assistant at Penn Hills and Shaler for coach Neil Gordon and two years at Mt. Lebanon with Chris Haering before being hired by Trinity in April 2012.

In his first season, the Hillers defeated Ringgold in the regular-season finale to earn a playoff spot. They lost to Montour, 27-6, in the first round.

In 2013, Trinity did not have a returning player who gained 100 yards of offense the previous year and struggled to a 1-8 finish.

Coyle’s final season was an interesting one. Trinity lost its first three games before winning four of its next five to jump into the playoff race. The Hillers’ postseason hopes ended with a 49-14 loss to Ringgold.
