Unbeaten Canevin holds off Wash High

Three Bishop Canevin players combined for 55 points and the undefeated Crusaders held off a late charge by visiting Washington for a 65-59 victory Friday night in a key Section 3-AA game.

Washington (1-2, 2-3) led 12-6 after one quarter, but Bishop Canevin scored 37 points over the next two quarter to forge a 43-30 advantage. DeQuay Isabell scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in Wash High’s 29-point fourth quarter, but the Prexies could pull no closer than six points.

Bonos and King led Bishop Canevin (3-0, 6-0) with 19 points each, and Weldon followed with 17 points.

Mat Popeck scored 16 points for Wash High, which hurt its comeback by making only six of 17 free throws.

South Fayette 59, Trinity 35: South Fayette’s basketball team finally played a game, and the Lions started with a bang, shutting out visiting Trinity in the first quarter and cruising to a 59-35 victory in a Section 5-AAA game.

South Fayette (1-0, 1-0), which had the start of its season delayed by the Lions’ run to the state football championship, forged a 14-0 lead after one quarter and led the cold-shooting Hillers 29-3 at halftime.

Brett Brumbugh led a balanced South Fayette offense by scoring 13 points. Tommy Silko was the only other player to score in double figures for the Lions with 10.

Trinity (1-2, 2-4) received 14 points and four three-pointers from Dylan Kern. Joey Koroly added 10 points for the Hillers, who scored 21 fourth-quarter points.

Elizabeth Forward 64, Ringgold 48: Elizabeth Forward’s shooters was red-hot from long range to start the game and the Warriors never cooled off in defeating visiting Ringgold 64-48 in Section 4-AAA.

EF (1-2, 3-4) made five three-point shots in the first quarter and finished the game with 11 treys as the Warriors snapped Ringgold’s two-game winning streak. The Warriors forged a 19-8 lead after one quarter, but Ringgold pulled to within 48-44 in the fourth quarter and had a chance to make it a one-possession game., The Rams, however, missed a three-pointer and EF closed the game with a 16-4 run.

Connor Paoletti led EF with 18 points. Luke Korenoski and George Proda had 17 each. Paoletti and Korenoski combined for nine three-pointers.

Nico Law and Anthony Pampena each scored 12 points to lead Ringgold (1-1, 3-2). George Martin followed with 11.

Bentworth 52, Carmichaels 35: Damon Petrola-Bakos, who missed Bentworth’s game earlier this week against Waynesburg because of illness, returned to the lineup and scored 17 points to lead the Bearcats to their first Section 4-AA win, 52-35, over visiting Carmichaels.

The first and fourth quarters were played to a 17-17 standoff, but Bentworth (1-2, 3-3) wont he game by outscoring the winless Mikes 35-18 over the middle two quarters.

Cody Brown and Jacob Kinsell each scored 11 points for Carmichaels (0-2, 0-5).

Charleroi 57, Waynesburg 40: Cam Miceli had 16 points as Charleroi remained unbeaten in Section 4-AA with a 57-40 victory over Waynesburg.

Matt Carr added 14 points and John Arnold had 13 for the Cougars (3-0, 3-3), who led 29-22 at the half and closed the game out with an 18-10 run.

Dom Sarra had 16 and Jason Zeleny 10 points for Waynesburg (1-2, 4-3).

Fort Cherry 76, Burgettstown 57: Phil Baker’s 28 points, including 18 in the first half, helped propel Fort Cherry to its first win of the season, a 76-57 Section 3-AA victory over Burgettstown.

Alex Babirad added 19 points, while Jessie McKean had 10 for the Rangers (1-2, 1-5).

Logan Triebsch scored 20 points for Burgettstown (1-2, 2-4), which also got 12 points from Hunter Lecker and 10 from Dylan Dhans.

Monessen 102, Avella 38: Noah Rullo had 25 points as five Monessen players finished in double figured and the Greyhounds defeated Avella, 102-38, in a Section 3-A game.

Jaden Altomore scored 19 points, Noah Yartin and Lavelle Rush 13 each, and Luke Beveridge 10 for Monessen (2-0, 3-3).

Matt Wander, Keith Painter and C.J. Norman had eight points each for Avella (1-2, 1-5).

Homewood, Alabama 49, Peters Township 41: Homewood, Ala., opened the game on an 18-7 run and maintained that advantage throughout the final three quarters to defeat Peters Township, 49-41, at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Mark Cook led all scorers for Homewood with 21 points.

Ryan Faloni and Tim Swoope had 10 points each for Peters Township (3-4).

West Greene 55, Mapletown 29: Craig Weaver scored 22 points and grabbed 25 rebounds to lead West Greene to a 55-29 Section 3-A victory over Mapletown.

Kolten Rush scored 16 for the Pioneers (1-1, 2-5), who also got 10 points from Bray Jackson.

Matt Hein led Mapletown 0-3, 0-5) with 18 points.

Salem Hills, Utah 59, Canon-McMillan 35: Salem Hills, Utah, defeated Canon-McMillan, 59-35, at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Fla. No further details were provided.

Canon-McMillan (2-3) plays Fernandina Beach, Fla., at 9 a.m. today.

Girls results

Burgettstown 39, Fort Cherry 25: Sam Scopel scored 12 points to lead Burgettstown to a 39-25 non-section win over Fort Cherry.

Michaela Bertovich added 10 points for the Blue Devils (6-2), who closed the game out on a 14-5 run.

Tina Bellhy scored 12 points to lead Fort Cherry (2-4).

Carmichaels 43, West Greene 8: Caroline Cree had another big offensive game, scoring 20 points, to lead Carmichaels to a 43-8 victory over West Greene in a non-section game.

Cree’s output included five three-point field goals and helped Carmichaels (3-4) to a 27-1 halftime lead. Emily Nedrow led West Greene with four points.
