Girls basketball roundup: Weiss’ big night propels McGuffey

Sammie Weiss scored 41 points and McGuffey built a 21-point halftime lead on its way to a 88-44 victory over Brownsville at the McGuffey Holiday Tournament Friday night.
The Highlanders (7-1) will face OLSH in the championship game tonight at 8 p.m., while the Falcons (3-5) play Fort Cherry in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
Weiss made two three-point shots and sank all five of her free-throw attempts. McGuffey had three more double-digit scorers: Katie Demi (19 points), Carae Wagner (12) and Rachel Czulewicz (12). The Highlanders led 41-20 at halftime before adding 19 points in the third quarter.
Charleroi 59, Monessen 36: Freshman guard Sierra Short scored a game-high 21 points as Charleroi defeated Monessen, 59-36, Friday at the Californa High School Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.
The Cougars (7-1) led by 11 points at halftime before outscoring Monessen, 21-7, in the third quarter.
Brentwood 55, Carmichaels 46: Carmichaels senior guard Caroline Cree scored a career-high 36 points, but the Mikes could not overcome a slow start as they fell to Brentwood, 55-46, at the Californa High School Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.
Cree also made a career-high eight three-point field goals for Carmichaels (3-6), which trailed by just four points at halftime despite scoring only five first-quarter points.
Carmichaels will face California tonight at 7 p.m.
Southmoreland 51, Waynesburg 22: Waynesburg made just seven field goals and did not exceed double digits in any quarter as it lost to Southmoreland, 51-22, at the Geibel Catholic Tournament.
The Scotties (4-4) advance to the title game tonight to face Geibel at 7 p.m., while the Raiders (1-7) face Wilkinsburg in the consolation game at 5 p.m.
Olivia Porter scored a game-high 18 points for Southmoreland, which led, 25-13, at halftime and held Waynesburg to just one point in the fourth quarter. Katrina Lauffer added 11 points.
Celinie Monica finished with 5 points for Waynesburg.
California 47, South Allegheny 22: Bailey Vig and Lyndsey Huhn combined for 25 points as California defeated South Allegheny, 47-22, at the Californa High School Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.
Vig scored 13 points and Huhn added 12 for Cal, which led 30-10 at halftime and eight different players scored for the Trojans.
OLSH 74, Fort Cherry 24: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart had three double-digit scorers and used a 40-point halftime lead to defeat Fort Cherry, 70-24, at the McGuffey Holiday Tournament.
The Chargers (7-1) advance to the championship game tonight at 8 p.m. where they will face McGuffey, while Fort Cherry (2-6) faces Brownsville at 6 p.m. in the consolation game.
