Jackets fall short of championship

Christian Jones led five Wilmington players in double figures with 16 points and the Quakers rallied over the final 12 minutes to defeat Waynesburg 72-69 Tuesday night in the championship game of the Zimmerman Classic hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Waynesburg (5-6), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, led 38-34 at halftime and held a 52-44 advantage with 12:08 remaining after a three-pointer by Kenny Klase.

Wilmington (4-7) rallied and took the lead for good at 69-67 on a jump shot by Dwight Johnson, who scored 13 points, with only 1:24 remaining.

A basket by Jacob Fleegle pulled Waynesburg to within 71-70 with 31 seconds to play before the Quakers’ Jonathan Bibbs made it a three-point game with a layup with 23 seconds left.

Waynesburg had a chance to force overtime, but the Yellow Jackets missed two three-point shots in final eight seconds.

Jason Propst scored a game-high 16 points for Waynesburg. B.J. Durham followed with 14 points and Fleegle scored 11. Tyler Miller led the Yellow Jackets on the boards with eight rebounds.

R.J. Leppert scored 13 points for Wilmington, and Bibbs and John Righter had 10 each.

Waynesburg held the game’s largest lead at 30-17 before Wilmington closed the first half on a 17-8 run.

St. John Fisher 80, Wash & Jeff 53: Optimystik Kinard, a 6-6 senior, scored 16 points and Stefan Brock contributed all of his 12 points in the second half as host St. John Fisher pulled away for an 80-53 victory over Washington & Jefferson Tuesday afternoon in the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa tournament.

Five players, including four starters, scored in double figures for St. John Fisher (7-2), which led 37-26 at halftime. Chaz Lott scored 12 points, and Adam Ambielli and Tyler English each had 11.

W&J (1-10) pulled to within 48-41 with 12:57 remaining after baskets by Tyler Haas, Adam Robison and Mitch Locher. St. John Fisher then went on a 26-7 run that opened a 74-48 lead and secured the victory for the Cardinals.

Mike Resnik had another big game for W&J, scoring a game-high 22 points and collecting eight rebounds. Robison came off the bench to score 10 points, grab seven rebounds and have three assists.

W&J returns to Henry Memorial Center to host Waynesburg in a PAC game Saturday afternoon.
