Some of the best shooting of the season allowed Waynesburg University’s basketball team to do something it hadn’t done in a decade: sweep Washington & Jefferson.

The Yellow Jackets hit 45 percent of their 60 shots, 20 of their 24 free throw attempts and eight of 19 three-point attempts to take an 82-77 victory over their rivals at henry Memorial Center.

The win pushed Waynesburg to 10-11, including 5-7 in the conference. W&J fell to 11-10 and 6-6 in the conference.

Waynesburg made 15 of 17 free throws in the second half and led for all but 14 seconds of the second half.

“We did a good job of spreading the floor,” said Waynesburg head coach Mark Christner. “We made some tough shots, and we were patient. We got the shots we wanted and the right guy shooting them.”

Most of the time, that guy was jacob Fleegle, who led allscoerers with 23 points. Brian Louco had 15 points and Jason Propst 14.

Four players reached double figures for the Presidents: Nate Bellhy with 15, Mike Resnik and Doubg Johnson with 14 apiece and Brett Rubin-Goldstein 11.

Mercyhurst 63, California 56: Jean Onana had 14 points as Mercyhurt topped California, 63-56, in a PSAC game.

Callon Dailey had a team-high seven rebounds for the Lakers (8-2, 12-8), including four at the offensive end.

Chris Williams and Arman Marks had 11 points each to lead California (4-7, 9-12). Alonzo Murphy had 12 rebounds.

California 79, Mercyhurst 65: Kaitlynn Fratz had 25 points as California rolled to a 79-65 PSAC win over Mercyhurst in a women’s college basketball game.

Emma Mahady added 14 points, while Irina Kuolj had 11 for the Vulcans (7-4, 13-7), who won despite being outrebounded 39-22.

California made up for that disadvantage on the boards by forcing 27 Mercyhurst turnovers, as opposed to having just 13 of its own.

Adrienne Kloecker had 22 points and Alayna White had 20 for the Lakers (4-6, 6-14).
