Big day for Waynesburg, W&J wrestlers at B-W tournament

BEREA, Ohio – The Waynesburg University wrestling team sent five wrestlers to the finals, captured two individual titles, and won the team championship Saturday at the John Summa Memorial Tournament hosted by Baldwin-Wallace.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior 174-pounder Anthony Bonaventura, who was named Most Valuable Wrestler of the tournament after going 4-0 with a win by pin and another by major decision. Senior 149-pounder Luke Lohr was Waynesburg’s other champion, going 4-0 with a win by pin and two by major decision.
Washington & Jefferson’s Josh Etzel (157) won his second straight title and Nick Carr (165) continued his strong start for the Presidents, who placed sixth out of nine teams.
Etzel earned four victories en route to defending his title and is now 24-2 overall He needs eight victories to become just the fourth wrestler in school history to win 100 for a career. Etzel cruised to a 7-0 triumph over Lake Erie’s Nathan Ball in the finals.
Carr, a South Fayette graduate, continued his undefeated start at W&J after transferring midyear from Division II Seton Hill. Making his second appearance for the Presidents, Carr notched three close victories to improve to 4-0. In the finals, Carr defeated Roy Daniels, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the latest D3wrestle.com national rankings. Carr came away with a 5-2 victory.
Waynesburg sophomore 125-pounder Gordan Bieber, freshman 133-pounder Filippo Crivelli and freshman 141-pounder Dom Ciaramella each advanced to the finals. Ciaramella won the quickest pin award after scoring a fall in only 24 seconds.
