Yellow Jackets win 4th straight

Jacob Fleegle scored 13 points, Waynesburg made 11 three-point field goals, and the Yellow Jackets overcame a nine-point deficit Saturday to defeat visiting Westminster 72-59 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
The win pushed Waynesburg above .500 in PAC play at 8-7 and to 13-11 overall. The Yellow Jackets moved a half-game ahead of idle Washington & Jefferson in fourth place in the conference standings. Waynesburg has won four in a row, its longest winning streak since the 2006-07 season.
Westminster (2-12, 3-20) has lost eight in a row. The Titans led 29-20 before Waynesburg went on a 20-3 run late in the first half. Christian Koroly, who came off the bench to score 12 points, scored six during the big surge. Koroly made three of Waynesburg’s three-pointers.
E.J. Coleman also had 12 points for the Yellow Jackets, and Byrum Louco had 10.
Clarion 91, California 74: Clarion’s DeMarius Miller scored 34 points and the Golden Eagles rolled to a 91-74 victory over visiting California in the PSAC West Division.
Clarion moves to 3-10 in the division and 5-16 overall. California is 4-10, 9-15. The Vulcans have lost five in a row.
California made 12 three-pointers, including six by point guard Jake Jacubec, who led the Vulcans with 22 points. Tynell Fortune scored 18 points and Arman Marks had 12.
The Vulcans couldn’t stop Miller, who made 12 of 18 shots from the field and was 8-for-8 at the free-throw line.
Women’s results
California 66, Clarion 53: Elena Antonenko came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points to power California to a 66-53 victory over host Clarion in a PSAC West Division game.
Cal (10-4, 16-7) has won five in a row. The Vulcans led by one point at halftime but used an 11-2 run midway through the second half to take a 52-42 lead.
Antonenko, who did not play in the Vulcans’ victory over IUP Wednesday, made seven of 10 shots and grabbed five rebounds. She scored 11 of her points in the second half.
Emma Mahady and Kate Seebohm each scored 12 points for Cal, whose bench outscored Clarion’s 39-15.
Wash & Jeff 86, Chatham 39: Kara Seamon had a career-high 11 assists, and 11 different Washington & Jefferson players scored, as the Presidents rolled to an 86-39 victory over PAC rival Chatham on Senior Day at Henry Memorial Center.
The Presidents (11-5, 16-7) improved to 22-0 all-time against Chatham (2-14, 3-20). The Presidents, sparked by an 18-0 run, raced to a 34-6 lead in the opening 13 minutes.
Chelsea Apke led W&J with 16 points and six rebounds in only 16 minutes of playing time. Alexa Burzese and Tori Bishop each scored 12 points, and Beka Bellhy had 11.
Seamon had a solid all-around performance with eight points, 11 assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Westminster 77, Waynesburg 76: Gabby Holko made a game-winning three-point shot with six seconds remaining to cap a wild second-half comeback by Westminster as the Titans edged Waynesburg 77-76 in a PAC game.
Westminster won despite giving up 56 first-half points and trailing by 17 points at halftime. The Titans outscored Waynesburg 38-20 in the second half.
The victory moves Westminster (10-6, 13-10) into a tie for fourth place in the PAC, with Waynesburg (10-6, 12-11). Westminster, however, holds the tiebreaker over the Yellow Jackets because it swept the season series. The teams are likely to meet in the quarterfinals of the PAC tournament with the fourth-place team having home-court advantage.
Westminster cut Waynesburg’s lead to single digits at 62-53, then tied the score at 69-69 with five minutes to play. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead and pushed it to six points, 75-69, with 3:38 remaining after a three-pointer by Katie Gehlmann, who scored a career-high 19 points.
Waynesburg, however, would score only one more point the rest of the way, when Elaine Hasek made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left, giving the Yellow Jackets a 76-74 lead.
Holko then made the game-winner, her fourth three of the game. She also was 11-for-11 at the free-throw line and scored a game-high 27 points. The Titans were 31-for-34 at the line, including 20-for-21 in the first half.
Waynesburg shot 54 percent from the field during its 54-point first half but was only 6-for-40 (15 percent) in the second half.
Hasek scored 15 points and Courtney Sargent had 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for Waynesburg.
