W&J women fall against Grove City

Mitch Marmelstein sank four free throws in the final 16 seconds to secure a 70-68 victory for Grove City over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Waynesburg fell to 0-3 in the conference and 5-7 overall. Grove City is 2-2 in the conference and 5-5 overall.
Grove City trailed 61-57 with under three minutes left, but surged ahead on consecutive three-pointers from junior forward Brian Giesler, who finished with 18 points.
Waynesburg tied the game when E.J. Coleman hit two free throws, but Giesler put Grove City ahead to stay with another three-pointer with 1:12 left.
Jackie Stewart led the Wolverines with 19 points and Coleman finished with a team-high 16 for Waynesburg. Kenny Klase had 13, while Jason Probst and Thomas Ellis had 11.
Shippensburg 72, California 61: A poor first half, in which California University scored just 18 points, led the Vulcans to a 72-61 loss at Shippensburg in a PSAC game.
The Vulcans dropped to 4-8 overall and remains winless on the road at 0-5. Shippensburg improved to 2-9.
Tynell Fortune had a team-high 25 points for Cal, which trailed by as many as 23 in the second half before rallying late. Alonzo Murphy added 15 and Jake Jacubec chipped in with 12.
Joe Lococo went 14 of 16 from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 27 for the Raiders. Abe Massaley contributed 13 points.
Waynesburg 85, Grove City 73: A balanced scoring attack powered Waynesburg past Grove City 85-73 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
The Yellow Jackets moved to 4-6, including 2-1 in the conference, while Grove City fell to 1-8 and 0-3 in the conference.
Elaine Hasek and Heather Davis each scored 18 points for the Yellow Jackets, who led 42-36 at halftime. Courtney Sargent poured in 15 points and Lauren Blair added 14 points and five assists.
Junior Kelsey Shirey poured in a career-high 25 points and set a Grove City record by sinking 13 of 13 free throw attempts. Cayley McLean had 12 points and Mary McDonald 11.
California 95, Shippensburg 90: Mike Glenn and Katelynn Fratz combined for 57 points to help California to a 95-90 victory over Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover game.
Cal moved to 6-5 and Shippensburg fell to 8-3.
Glenn had 28 points and Fratz 27 for the Vulcans. The duo combined to hit 20 of 35 shots from the field and 10 out of 14 from the free throw line. Emma Mahady had a strong effort with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Stephanie Knauer scored a game-high 31 points for Shippensburg. Sara Strybuc had 19 points.
