Waynesburg upset in PAC play

Anthony Thomas had 24 points as Westminster won a shootout with Waynesburg, upsetting the Yellow Jackets, 96-90, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday.
Charlie Wallander added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Westminster (1-3, 2-11), while Paul Carswell added 20 points, Matt Getsy 13 and Nate Herrmann 10 for the Titans.
Thomas Ellis had 20 points to lead Waynesburg (2-4, 7-8), which also got 16 points each from Trinity High School graduate Christian Koroly and Jacob Fleegle. Tyler Miller had 10 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
Washington & Jefferson 81, Penn State-DuBois 59: Fort Cherry High School graduate Nate Bellhy had 19 points and 12 rebounds as Washington & Jefferson defeated Penn State-DuBois, 81-59, in a non-conference game.
Mike Resnik also had 19 points for the Presidents (7-7), who led 37-14 at the half.
Arlen Bewer had 15 points off the bench, while Shakeel Brown scored 12 points for Penn State-DuBois.
Pitt-Johnstown 78, California 64: Bill Luther scored 16 points, as Pitt-Johnstown pounded the ball inside to beat California, 78-64, in a PSAC game.
UPJ (3-2, 10-5) scored 44 of its points in the paint, helping the Mountain Cats to a 54 percent shooting day.
Matt Pelo scored 15 points for UPJ, while Adam Shaheen added 13.
Jake Jacubec and Arman Marks had 13 points each for California (1-4, 6-9), which shot just 34 percent despite holding a 35-33 halftime lead. Drew Cook and Alonzo Murphy added 10 points each for the Vulcans.
Women
Pitt-Johnstown 73, California 72: Nicole Carman’s layup with six seconds remaining in the game lifted Pitt-Johnstown to a 73-72 PSAC victory over California.
A free throw by Emma Mahady with 1:10 remaining gave California a 72-71 lead, but Carman’s driving basket was the lone points scored by either team in the final minute.
Jasmine Harper had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountain Cats (3-2, 6-9), who also got 14 points from Leah Hansen. Carman and Inaya Stephenson came off the bench to add 12 points each for UPJ, which led 42-36 at the half despite California taking a 15-7 lead in the game’s opening minutes.
Elena Antonenko led California (2-3, 8-6) with 20 points, while Mahady and Chelsea McKnight added 14 and 13, respectively.
Washington & Jefferson 70, Chatham 51: Valerie Dunlap had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 70-51 win over Chatham in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Fort Cherry graduate Beka Bellhy added 13 points, while Kara Seamon had 11 for W&J (3-3, 8-5), which led 49-29 at the half. Tori Bishop had 11 rebounds off the bench.
Rachel McClain led Chatham (1-5, 2-11) with 13 points.
Westminster 78, Waynesburg 71: Gabby Holko had 22 points as Westminster handed Waynesburg a 78-71 defeat in a PAC game.
Courtney Zitt added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Klein had 12 points for Westminster (3-2, 6-6).
Courntey Sargent came off the bench to score 29 points and grab 18 rebounds – both career highs – for Waynesburg, which fell to 4-2 in the PAC and 6-7 overall. Sargent’s output came in just 26 minutes of action.
