Palone named harness driver of year
For the seventh time in his Hall of Fame harness racing career, Dave Palone is Harness Tracks of America’s Driver of the Year.
The 51-year-old Palone edged Yannick Gingras by one point for the award, which is based on year-end statistics for wins, purses and in-the-money finishes. Drivers receive points in descending value, starting with 25 for first place, based on their finishes in those categories.
A Rices Landing native and Washington resident, Palone won 645 races, which tied for second place in North America, had a driver rating of .385, which was third, and $6.12 million in purses, which were 12th.
Gingras had $14.23 million in purses, good for second place, finished eighth in driver rating, at .367, and tied for eighth in wins, with 537.
Tim Tetrick, Brian Sears and George Napolitano Jr. rounded out the top five.
Palone’s previous HTA titles were in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009.
Herve Filion holds the record for most HTA Driver of the Year honors, with 10.
