Local briefs: McGuffey beats Waynesburg

McGuffey swept the heavyweight bouts on the way to a 49-26 vicory over Waynesburg in a Section 4-A dual meet Wednesday. The results in Thursday’s edition were incorrect. McGuffey benefited from three forfeits, two of them coming in the heavier weights, and got pins from Gage Nicolella (106), Tyler Harris (152), Liam McElhoes (195) and Austin Doak (Hvy). A.C. Headlee (132), Terry Victor (145) and Colin McCracken (160) had pins for the Raiders.
Washington & Jefferson was ranked 25th in the country in the preseason D3baseball.com rankings.
The Presidents, who are coming off a 33-13 season, were also ranked 28th in the American Baseball Coaches Association Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll for NCAA Division III schools.
Karvel Anderson scored 24 points as Robert Morris came back from a late 11-point deficit to beat St. Francis (Pa.) 73-68 on Thursday night.
Robert Morris (8-10, 3-0 Northeast Conference) trailed 65-54 with less than 4 ½ minutes to play but ended on a 19-3 run to win the game.
The Colonials’ late run came right after St. Francis had scored 15 straight points to erase a 54-49 deficit of its own.
Robert Morris hit 8 of 17 from beyond the arc, including 5 of 10 from Anderson, who was coming off back-to-back 30-point performances. The Colonials also shot well from the free throw line, where they hit 19 of 22.
Lucky Jones and Jeremiah Worthem each added 12 points apiece for Robert Morris.
St. Francis (3-13, 1-2) shot 58.5 percent from the field and was 11 of 23 on 3-pointers. Malik Harmon led the Red Flash with 21 points.
