Heave, whoa: J-M beats Cal on half-court shot

Rece Henneman snak a half-court shot at the buzzer as Jefferson-Morgan won a key Section 5-AA matchup against California Friday night, 53-52, in a boys basketball game.

Henneman scored the final three of his 23 points on the evening to push the Rockets into fourth place in the section with a 4-4 record. Jefferson-Morgan is 7-8 overall.

Austin Clark added 18 points for the Rockets, who led 29-21 at the half, while Christian Randolph added 12.

Dimitri Clements had 16 points, Aaron Previnsky 12 and Malik Jackson 10 for California (3-4, 5-8), which outscored the Rockets 19-14 in the fourth quarter.

Peters Township 37, Mt. Lebanon 35: Peters Township climbed back into the thick of the playoff race out of Section 4-AAAA with a 37-35 upset of host Mt. Lebanon, 37-35.

Mt. Lebanon (4-3, 5-9), which trailed 22-12 at halftime, battled back and tied the score at 35-35 on a basket by Johnny David with 1:14 remaining. David led the Blue Devils with 15 points.

Peters Township (4-4, 7-8) then held the ball for more than a minute until Timmy Swope found J.C. Brush open inside and fed him for the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining. Mt. Lebanon had the game’s final possession but could not attempt a shot after advancing the ball only to midcourt.

Swope was the only player to score in double figures for PT with 11.

Monessen 56, Clairton 41: Lavelle Rush scored a game-high 19 points and Monessen took control at the top of the Section 3-A standings by defeating Clairton 56-41 in a chippy game on the Greyhounds’ court.

The win gives Monessen sole possession of first place at 4-0 in the league and 9-4 overall. Clairton is 2-1, 5-3.

The win was the 550th in the career of Monessen coach Joe Salvino. He has a record of 550-224.

Clintell Gillaspie scored 10 points for Monessen. Justice Rawlins had 11 rebounds, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

JuJuan Bray led Clairton with 13 points.

South Fayette 63, South Park 35: Pat Brady scored a game-high 18 points and made four of South Fayette’s seven three-pointers as the Lions snapped a three-game losing streak with a 63-35 victory over visiting South Park in Section 5-AAA.

South Fayette (5-2, 8-4) doubled up South Park in the first half, leading 32-16 at halftime. The Lions then put the game out of reach by outscoring the Eagles 13-5 in the third quarter.

Justin Watson scored 10 points for South Fayette. Dan Wanker led South Park (3-4, 5-11) with 11 points.

Geibel Catholic 60, Avella 52: James Ewing scored 29 points and Geibel snapped a 10-game losing streak by defeating Avella 60-52 in a Section 3-A game in Connellsville.

Avella (1-3, 3-11) received 20 points from Brandon Miller, but the Eagles hurt their cause by making only 14 of 31 free throws. Walt Kopko scored 12 points for Avella.

Brentwood 59, Fort Cherry 49, 2 OTs: Troy Elphinstone scored 19 points and Brentwood outlasted host Fort Cherry 59-49 in a double-overtime Section 4-AA game.

In a game that was tight until the final seconds of the second overtime, Brentwood’s Andrew Stofesky made a three-pointer with less than five seconds to play in the regulation that forced overtime tied at 38-38. Fort Cherry’s Phil Baker then made a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first overtime to force an extra session.

Fort Cherry’s Zach Dysert led all scorers with 20 points. He made eight of nine free throws. The Rangers fell to 3-4 in section and 5-7 overall.

Stofesky finished with 15 points for Brentwood (2-4, 7-6), which has won three in a row.

Carmichaels 69, Mapletown 42: Brandon Lawless had 37 points as Carmichaels pulled away from Mapletown in the second half for a 69-42 Section 3-A win.

Cory Fuller added 10 points for the Mikes (3-1, 11-2), who held a 30-26 lead at the half before going on a 24-7 run in the third quarter.

Dereck Riggleman had 20 points for the Maples (1-3, 5-8), who also got 12 points from Eric Atwood.

Charleroi 70, Bentworth 50: Evan Anderson and Ryan Konek had 14 points each as Charleroi topped Bentworth, 70-50, in a Section 5-AA game.

Dakota Moorer added 13 points, while John Arnold had 10 for the Cougars (6-1, 8-4).

Angelo Rios-Lopez had 23 points for Bentworth (1-7, 1-12).

Seton-La Salle 85, Chartiers-Houston 54: Dale Clancy had 20 points as Seton-La Salle sprinted out to a 48-24 halftime lead en route to an 85-54 Section 4-AA win over Chartiers-Houston.

Malik White added 18 and Christian Del Greco 17 points for Seton-La Salle (7-0, 14-0).

Alex Ferrari led Chartiers-Houston (4-3, 10-4) with 23 points, while Kodie Hanley added 13 points in the losing effort.

Brownsville 62, West Greene 54: Ryan Novotny had 16 points as Brownsville pulled away from West Greene in the second half of a 62-54 Section 5-A win over West Greene.

Deshaunte Bell added 11 points and Cole Novotny chipped in 10 for Brownsville (7-1, 8-5) in a game that was tied at 28-28 a the half.

Ben Carlise scord 25 points and Craig Weaver had 17 for West Greene (0-7, 3-11).

Girls results

McGuffey 62, Avella 51: Sammie Weiss scored a game-high 22 points – all in the first three quarters – and McGuffey overcame a halftime deficit by rallying for a 62-51 victory over host Avella in a non-section game.

Avella (9-6) outscored McGuffey 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 26-23 lead into halftime. The Highlanders, however, rallied and outscored Avella 21-10 in the third quarter to take the lead for good. Weiss scored nine of her points in the pivotal quarter.

Rachel Czulewicz finished with 12 points for McGuffey (12-3), which has won five in a row.

Avella had four players score in double figures, led by Laura Craig’s 13 points. Kenna Drazich, Aleeshia Thomas and Kira Doaks each scored 10 points. Thomas, with 11 rebounds, and Doaks, with 10 rebounds, each had a double-double.

West Greene 54, Hundred, W.Va. 8: Marissa Raber had 26 points and 10 rebounds as West Greene jumped out to a 23-0 lead en route to a 54-8 non-section win over Hundred, W. Va.

Emily Courtwright added 13 points and 11 rebounds for West Greene (8-4).

South Park 78, South Fayette 43: Haley Torris’ 18 points led South Park to a 78-43 Section 5-AAA win over South Fayette.

Carlee Kilgus had 15 points for South Fayette (4-2, 6-7).

Monessen 41, Clairton 29: Mariha Johnson and Teraee Bradford combined for 35 points as Monessen defeated visiting Clairton 41-29.

Johnson scored 20 points Bradford had 15 to pace Monessen, which broke the game open in the second half after leading by four points at halftime.
