Terone Johnson had 14 points and five rebounds to lead Purdue to a 65-64 win over Penn State on Saturday night.
Kendall Stephens and Basil Smotherman each scored 12 points for the Boilermakers (13-5, 3-2 Big Ten), who have won three straight Big Ten games for the first time since February 2012.
Tim Frazier had 19 points and 10 rebounds and D.J. Newbill added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Nittany Lions (9-10, 0-6), who have lost six straight, all in league play.
Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining to tie the game at 64 and Ronnie Johnson broke up Penn State’s inbounds pass before A.J. Hammons scored a free throw with a second remaining to capture the win.
Newbill was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1:25 remaining and scored 2 of 3 free throws to give the Nittany Lions a 60-57 lead.
VCU 80, Duquesne 65: Briante Weber and Melvin Johnson each scored 12 points, all but five coming in the second half, as Virginia Commonwealth rallied to beat Duquesne 80-65 on Saturday.
Rob Brandenberg scored 11, and Treveon Graham had 10 for VCU (14-4, 2-1 Atlantic 10). Juvonte Reddic scored nine and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The lead changed hands seven times until L.G. Gill hit a 3-pointer to give Duquesne (8-8, 1-3) a 27-26 lead and the Dukes led 31-27 at halftime. Duquesne shot 38.2 percent from the field in the half to 33.3 percent for VCU.
Reddic put the Rams back in front 36-35 with a layup in the second half and VCU pulled ahead on a 10-1 run. Johnson’s back-to-back treys sparked a 13-2 run, and the Rams led 71-52 with 3:13 to play and stayed ahead.
Derrick Colter led Duquesne with 13 and Jeremiah Jones and Tra’Vaughn White scored 10 apiece.
Robert Morris 77, Mount St Mary’s 69: Jeremiah Worthem scored 21 points to lead Robert Morris past Mount St. Mary’s 77-69 on Saturday.
Leading 66-65 with less than three minutes to play, Robert Morris (9-10, 4-0 Northeast Conference) closed the game by hitting 11 of 12 free throws. The Colonials shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line for the game.
Worthem sunk all six of his free throws and went 7 of 11 from the field. Lucky Jones added 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Robert Morris.
After trailing at halftime the Colonials went on a 14-3 run early in the second half to take a 43-40 lead.
Robert Morris has now won four straight after a stretch of just two wins in 10 games.
Rashad Whack led Mount St. Mary’s (6-11, 2-2) with 22 points.
