CALIFORNIA – Norman Taylor scored 17 points and Perry Traditional Academy held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Washington to beat the Prexies, 63-59, Sunday afternoon in the Martin Luther King Classic at the California University Convocation Center.
Washington (12-4) almost erased a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter, pulling to within two points in the final minute.
Trailing 51-36 after three quarters, Washington turned to its full-court press and it gave Perry problems. The Prexies pulled to within 61-59 and had possession of the basketball with a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds. A shot by Dupree Jenkins, however, rimmed out and Perry gathered in the rebound. Wash High had to foul and Perry converted two free throws to seal the victory.
“We forced some turnovers with the press,” Wash High coach Mark Gaither said. “Our guys played hard. They never quit.”
Kevin Griffin scored 13 points and Devin Lyles had 11 for Perry (5-9), which made three fewer field goals than Wash High but converted 18 of 26 free throws. The Prexies were 12-for-21 at the free-throw line.
Wash High’s DeQuay Isbell shared game scoring honors with Taylor by tossing in 17 points. Quorteze Levy followed with 15 points and Jenkins had 11.

Justin Watson, with 14 points, was the only player to score in double figures for South Fayette (8-5). The Lions shot only 31 percent from the field and made three of 17 three-pointers. Watson grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists.
