Trinity shoots down QV; Avella prevails

Trinity used some long-range shooting to win its third consecutive game, 48-39, over visiting Quaker Valley in a Section 5-AAA girls basketball game Monday night.

The win keeps Trinity (5-2, 11-4) in second place in the section.

The Hillers were able to build a 10-point halftime lead, which helped them overcome being held to only two points in the third quarter, when Quaker Valley (3-5, 6-8) pulled to within 31-27.

Freshman Sierra Kotchman made five three-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points to lead Trinity. Rachel Phillis also had a big game, contributing 14 points.

Alanna Davidson had 15 points and Karen Pugh 14 points for Quaker Valley.

Avella 51, Winchester-Thurston 39: Avella finally wrapped up its tipoff tournament with a 51-39 victory over Winchester-Thurston. The game was postponed because of severe weather Dec. 7.

Kenna Drazich scored 14 of her career-high 24 in the fourth quarter for the Eagles (10-6). Laura craig added 13 points, including five key free throws in the final eight minutes. Avella outscored Winchester-Thurston 21-10 in that quarter.

Winchester-Thurston fell to 5-6.

McGuffey 60, Burgettstown 31: Sammie Weiss scored a game-high 21 points and McGuffey won its fifth consecutive game, 60-31 over host Burgettstown in Section 5-AA.

Weiss was supported by Abby Pattison with 14 points and Rachel Czulewicz with 12 points. The section-leading Highlanders improved to 7-0 in the league and 13-3 overall.

Freshman Paige Sherman scored 12 points to lead Burgettstown (2-6, 3-11).

Chartiers-Houston 59, Wilkinsburg 7: Addie Knetzer and Deja Wormsley combined for 27 points to help Chartiers-Houston stop Wilkinsburg, 59-7, ina Section 4-AA game.

Knetzer led the way with 14 and Wormsely chipped in with 13 for C-H (4-4, 10-5).

Wilkinsburg fell to 0-14, including 0-8 in the section.

Carmichaels 43, West Greene 30: A strong first half and proficency at the free throw line propelled Carmichaels to a 43-30 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 3-A game.

The Mikes (2-3, 4-11) bolted to a 22-11 halftime lead and sank 18 of 21 free throws in the game. Amanda Brown and Caroline Cree each scored 12 points.

Alyssa Raber had 13 points and Madison Raber 10 for the Pioneers (2-3, 8-5).

Bethel Park 63, Canon-McMillan 56: Bethel Park broke a 41-41 tie in the third quarter by outscoring Canon-McMillan 22-15 to take a 63-56 victory ina Section 4-AAAA game.

The Black Hawks (7-1, 12-1) sank 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Shannon Conley scored a team-high 17 points and Harper Zimmer and Samantha Simpson each added 10.

Olivia Lorusso scored a game-high 22 points for the Big Macs (3-5, 7-10). Danielle Parker chipped in with 12 points and Cheyenne Trest tossed in 11.

Fort Cherry 53, Jefferson-Morgan 16: Rachel Bellhy scored 22 points and Fort Cherry held visiting Jefferson-Morgan scoreless into the second quarter as the Rangers cruised to a 53-16 victory in a non-section game.

Jenna Lucas scored 14 points for Fort Cherry (8-4), which has won five in a row, each by at least nine points. The Rangers led Jefferson-Morgan (7-7) 15-0 after one quarter and 29-5 at halftime.

Sophomore Ally Bogden led J-M with 11 points.

South Side Beaver 61, Bentworth 29: South Side Beaver had too many Cheyennes for Bentworth.

Cheynne Siek scored a game-high 21 points and Cheyenne Winkle followed with 13 as South Side Beaver defeated the host Bearcats 61-29 in Section 5-AA.

SSB improved to 5-3 in the section and 7-9 overall. The Rams held Bentworth to 10 points in the first half while forging a 27-point lead.

Autumn Zgorlinski led Bentworth with eight points.

Clay-Battelle 44, Mapletown 30: Kaitlyn Casino scored a game-high 14 points and Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) built a double-digit lead in the first half and cruised to a 44-30 victory over host Mapletown.

Fifteen players scored in the game and Casino was the only one who reached double figures. Clay-Battelle led 10-2 after one quarter and 23-13 at halftime.

Lauren Sanetrik led Mapletown (1-13) with nine points. The Maples have lost nine in a row.
