Along with changes to the WPIAL high school football conferences, realignment adjusted other fall sports.
In boys soccer, Ringgold and Trinity have dropped from Class AAA and will join Section 6-AA. The Hillers and Rams will join Brownsville, Laurel Highlands, McGuffey, Uniontown and Waynesburg in the section. Charleroi has dropped from Section 6-AA to Section 4-A, joining Bentworth, Beth-Center, California, Geibel, Monessen and Wash High.
In girls’ soccer, Canon-McMillan and Peters Township have relocated from Section 5-AAA to Section 4, where they will battle with Brashear, Chartiers Valley, Moon, Trinity and West Allegheny. Ringgold has dropped from AAA in girls’ soccer, as well, joining Section 4-AA.
In girls’ volleyball, Wash High has dropped from Section 5-AA to Section 6-A. The Prexies will battle Avella, Bentworth, Beth-Center, Burgettstown, Chartiers-Houston and Fort Cherry for the section title.
The track was listed “frozen,” but 13-1 Montenegro was sizzling, blowing by the leader on the backside and holding on late to capture Tuesday’s $22,500 Filly & Mare Not Listed Preferred/Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
Away fifth, Montenegro moved first over for Tony Hall and brushed to the front. But she was all out to hold off the Lightning Lane charge of Shine N Shimmer, who missed by a nose, with Western Drag third. The winning time was 1:56.3.
Randy Bendis trains Montenegro, a 6-year-old daughter of Camluck-Cyber Wave who vaulted over $400,000 in career earnings, and owns with Tom Pollack.
Hall drove four winners and Dave Palone three on the 16-race card while Tyler Stillings enjoyed a training triple and a winning drive.
Gary Harris scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half, helping No. 3 Michigan State beat Indiana 71-66 Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten.
The Spartans (18-1, 7-0) have won 11 straight games, extending their best one-loss start in a season in school history. The Hoosiers (12-7, 2-4) have lost two straight and four of six.
• Anthony Hickey made four consecutive free throws in the final minute and LSU held on for a 77-71 victory against Missouri.
• Jonathan Holmes made a catch-and-shoot 3 pointer at the buzzer to send Texas to a 67-64 victory over No. 22 Kansas State on Tuesday night, the Longhorns’ fourth straight victory in the Big 12 and second in a row over a ranked team.
• DeAndre Daniels scored a career-high 31 points and Shabazz Napier added 27 to lead UConn to a 90-66 win over Temple in the first meeting between the two schools in 49 years.
LeBron James scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, Chris Bosh added 16 and the Miami Heat blew an 18-point lead before rallying to beat the Boston Celtics 93-86.
Chris Andersen scored 13 points and made all five of his shots for Miami, which ended the game on a 9-0 run.
• Andray Blatche came off the bench and had a team-high 18 points and reserve forward Mirza Teletovic added 14 points as the Brooklyn Nets continued their resurgence with an eighth win in nine games, beating the Orlando Magic 101-90.
