W&J’s starters defeat Geneva

Doug Johnson and Tyler Haas combined for 44 points and eight three-pointers Wednesday night to lead Washington & Jefferson to an 80-68 victory over Geneva in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game in Beaver Falls.
Haas paced W&J (4-4, 9-8) with a game-high 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Johnson followed with 20 points, making 6 of 9 shots from three-point range.
Mike Resnik scored 14 points and Brett Rubin-Goldstein had 12 for W&J. All but two of the Presidents’ 80 points were scored by their starting five.
W&J built a 14-point lead in the first half, but Geneva pulled to within 41-40 early in the second half. The Presidents then scored seven consecutive points, including a three by Johnson. Geneva (0-8, 4-13) did draw to within 56-54 with eight minutes left, but Johnson made another three-pointer and the Golden Tornadoes never threatened again.
Jordan Harbison was Geneva’s leading scorer with 21 points.
Saint Vincent 87, Waynesburg 68: Saint Vincent, the PAC leader, pulled away early in the second half and cruised to its 11th consecutive win, 87-68, over visiting Waynesburg.
Saint Vincent (8-0, 15-2) led 39-33 at halftime. The Bearcats then outscored Waynesburg 22-5 over the first eight minutes of the second half.
Isaac Tuner and Dillon Stith each scored 20 points for Saint Vincent, Ben Klimchock had 17 and Sean Kett 12.
Freshman Christian Koroly was the only player to score in double figures for Waynesburg (3-5, 8-9). He finished with 10 points.
Wash & Jeff 91, Geneva 47: Washington & Jefferson’s Taylor Cortazzo scored a career-high 18 points as the Presidents routed host Geneva, 91-47, in a PAC game.
W&J (6-3, 11-5), which pulled into a tie for third place in the conference with Waynesburg and Westminster, scored 49 points in the first half and forged a 34-point lead by intermission. The Presidents led 10-5 with 10:40 left, then closed the half on a 39-10 run.
Erin Lavery scored 13 points for W&J, Madison Bastress had 12 and Tori Bishop 10.
Cortazzo almost had a double-double as she grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Heidi Mann led Geneva (0-9, 1-14) with 12 points.
Saint Vincent 98, Waynesburg 82: Taylor Mathers scored a game-high 23 points and Saint Vincent broke open a close game early in the second half and defeated visiting Waynesburg, 98-82, in a PAC game.
Saint Vincent (8-1, 11-5) led 43-37 at halftime and pulled away with a 12-2 run that pushed the advantage to 66-47. The Bearcats, who remained one game behind conference leader Thomas More, which won by 78 points (112-34) over Bethany, led by as many as 24 points in the second half before Waynesburg closed to within 88-76 with 2:21 remaining.
That, however, was also close as the Yellow Jackets could get.
Elie Collins scored 19 points for Saint Vincent, Jill Kegg had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jasmine Weems 12 points.
Waynesburg (6-3, 8-8), which shot only 32 percent from the field, was led by Elaine Hasek’s 16 points and game-high 13 rebounds. Hayden Giuliani and Lauren Blair each had 15 points, and Katie Gehlmann scored 13 points.
