Fast start propels C-H past Wash High

Chartiers-Houston used a 28-point first quarter to jump in front of Wash High and defeated the Prexies, 63-59, in a critical Section 4-AA boys game for the Bucs Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers (6-3, 12-4) were led by three double-digit scorers: Alec Ferrari (15 points), Kodie Hanley (17 points) and AJ Myers (12 points). Hanley added 15 rebounds for Chartiers-Houston and Ferrari chipped in six assists. The Bucs led 28-9 after the first quarter and went seven for nine from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory – including a perfect four for four from Myers.

Wash High (7-2, 13-5) was led in scoring by Nate Swart, who finished with 18 points.

Bethel Park 49, Peters Township 40: Joe Mascaro scored 20 points and Bethel Park moved into sole possession of second place in Section 4-AAAA with a 49-40 win over host Peters Township.

Bethel Park (8-3, 13-4) won with a big first quarter, forging a 14-5 lead over the Indians. Anthony Bomar scored 11 points for the Black Hawks.

Tim Swoope scored 13 points and Rylen Faloni had 10 for PT (6-5, 9-9), which pulled to within three points in the third quarter but could get no closer.

Monessen 88, Avella 43: Javon Brown scored 14 of his 19 points in Monessen’s big first half and the Greyhounds rolled to an 88-43 victory over visiting Avella in Section 3-A.

Clintell Gillaspie chipped in 17 points, and Kayne Jackson and Jaden Altomore had 12 each for Monessen (6-0, 12-4), which led 54-22 at halftime. The Greyhounds have won eight in a row.

Monessen’s Justice Rawlins had nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Jackson grabbed eight rebounds.

Brandon Miller had a big game for Avella (1-5, 3-13), scoring a game-high 22 points.

South Park 80, McGuffey 50: Two players reached the 20-point mark to lead South Park past McGuffey, 80-50, in Section 5-AAA play.

Justin Gorny led the Eagles (5-5, 7-12) with 22 points and Dan Wanker added 21 for South Park. Zach Maxwell led McGuffey with 11 points. The Highlanders (0-8, 2-16) trailed 41-26 at halftime and were outscored 23-11 in the third quarter to fall behind in the section matchup.

Brownsville 66, Jefferson-Morgan 51: The Novotney brothers, Cole and Ryan, combined for 33 points to lift Brownsville past Jefferson-Morgan, 66-51, in a Section 5-AA game.

Cole led the Blackhawks with 18 points and Ryan added 15. Brownsville (9-1, 10-6) also had Nick Despot add 13 points and Deshawtae Bell finished with 10.

The Rockets (4-6, 7-10) were led by Gage Clark, who had 18 points with four three-point shots.

Girls results

Fort Cherry 58, Wilkinsburg 10: Rachel Bellhy scored 22 points to lead Fort Cherry to a 58-10 win over Wilkinsburg in Section 4-AA play.

Along with Bellhy’s 22 points, senior Jenna Lucas added 10 for the Rangers (5-4, 9-8) and Tina Bellhy chipped in eight. Fort Cherry led 34-4 at halftime before outscoring Wilkinsburg (0-10, 0-17), 24-6 in the final 16 minutes of play. The Tigers were led in scoring by Seraiah Ramsey, who finished with six points.

Trinity 71, Montour 37: Sierra Kotchman and Mary Dunn combined for 39 points to lead Trinity to a 71-37 win over Montour in a Section 5-AAA game.

Kotchman finished with a team-high 20 points for the Hillers (8-2, 14-4) and Dunn chipped in 19 to extend Trinity’s winning streak to six games. Julia Dieks led Montour (0-9, 0-17) with 16 points.

Avella 49, Monessen 27: Kenna Drazich scored 16 points and Avella held Monessen scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 49-27 victory over the host Greyhounds in a non-section game.

Kira Doaks gave Avella (12-6) a 1-2 scoring punch, tossing in 15 points. The Eagles led 13-8 after one quarter, then outscored Monessen (3-13) 10-0 over the next eight minutes.

Burgettstown 51, Western Beaver 13:

Michaela Bertovich led a balanced offense with 10 points, and Burgettstown held Western Beaver scorless in the first quarter, as the Bluer Devils rolled to a 51-13 non-section victory.

Burgettstown, which led 29-3 at halftime, improved its record to 6-12. The Blue Devils have won three of their last four.

Western Beaver is 0-19.
