Saint Vincent rally stuns Presidents

J.C. Howard’s three-pointer – his fifth of the game – gave Saint Vincent the lead with 21 seconds left and the Bearcats held on for a wild 80-77 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s game Wednesday night at Henry Memorial Center.

The win was the 21st consecutive in PAC play for Saint Vincent (9-0, 16-2), but the Bearcats had to overcome a seven-point in the final two minutes. The Bearcats have won 12 in a row.

W&J (5-5, 10-9) led 74-67 before Howard and Saint Vincent’s Isaac Turner made three-pointers to pull the Bearcats to within 74-73 with 53 seconds remaining. W&J’s Mike Resnick made one of two free throws with 31 seconds to go to give the Presidents a two-point edge, but Howard made his go-ahead three to put Saint Vincent in front 76-75.

The Bearcats then forced a W&J turnover, which led to two Howard free throws and a 78-75 lead. W&J’s Tyler Haas was fouled with five seconds left and made two free throws, cutting SVs lead to 78-77. The Bearcats’ Pat Jones added two free throws to make it a three-point game, and W&J’s Doug Johnson missed a desperation three-pointer as time expired.

Turner scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead Saint Vincent. Howard finished with 23 points, Dillon Stith had 16 and Sean Kett had 10.

Resnik’s 19 points paced W&J, which shot 54 percent from the field and made 22 of 26 free throws. Nate Bellhy had 15 points, and Johnson and Haas each scored 10.

California 62, Gannon 59: Alonzo Murphy led a balanced California attack with 12 points and the Vulcans knocked off Gannon 62-59 in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

Cal moved closer to the .500 mark, improving to 4-5 in the division and 9-10 overall. The Vulcans received 10 points each from Josh Dombrosky and Arman Marks.

Raphell Thomas-Edwards scored a game-high 18 points for Gannon (6-3, 11-8).

Waynesburg 63, Grove City 60: Waynesburg edged visiting Grove City 63-60 in a PAC game. No game details were available at press time.

Women’s results

Gannon 65, California 57: Jen Papich scored a game-high 21 points and Gannon, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, held off an upset bid by California, defeating the Vulcans 65-57 in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

Gannon (8-1, 19-1), which led by 14 points in the first half, closed the game on a 6-1 run, clinching the victory at the free-throw line.

California (5-4, 11-7) took a 49-48 on a three-pointer by Emma Mahady with 4:37 remaining. It was Cal’s first lead of the game.

Saint Vincent 92, Wash & Jeff 82: Elle Collins made six three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points to lead Saint Vincent to a 92-82 victory over host Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game.

Chelsea Apke led W&J (7-4, 12-6) with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Valerie Dunlap and Beka Bellhy each had 19 points, and Kara Seamon scored 11.

Waynesburg 72, Grove City 58: Freshman Courtney Sargent scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to power Waynesburg to a 72-58 victory over visiting Grove City in a PAC game.

Waynesburg (8-3, 10-8) took control of the game with a 15-2 run that opened a 49-35 advantage in the second half.

The Yellwo Jackets then protected the lead down the stretch by making free throws. Waynesburg was 24 of 35 at the free-throw line.

Waynesburg’s Hayden Giuliani scored 14 points and Katie Gehlmann came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

Kelsey Shirey led Grove City (3-8, 4-13) with 18 points.
