C-M’s Lorusso surpasses 1,000 points

Diandra Caldwell scored 22 points to give Upper St. Clair a 72-60 win over Canon-McMillan and spoiling a special night for Olivia Lorusso.

Lorusso, a 5-10 senior forward, scored 20 points and surpassed 1,000 points in her career for the Big Macs (4-7, 8-12). Lorusso is only the third girl in Big Macs’ history to reach that milestone. She joins Amanda Sinovich and Emily Hansen (2000) in that elite group. Lorusso will attend Robert Morris next fall on a softball scholarship.

Brittany Hutchinson added 14 points for the Big Macs.

Rachel Mazzie scored 20 points for USC (7-3, 12-4) and Madiosn Serio chipped in with 14.

Fort Cherry 46, Steel Valley 33: Rachel Bellhy scored a season-high 32 points to lead Fort Cherry to a 46-33 victory over Steel Valley in a Section 4-AA.

Jenna Lucas added 12 points on a three-point field goal and nine free throws for the Rangers (6-4, 10-5).

Rayon Williams and Lexus Watkins each scored 12 for Steel Valley (1-9, 1-16).

Trinity 49, New Castle 44: Trinity hit some crucial free throws late in the game to take a 49-44 nonsection victory from New Castle.

Sierra Kotchman and Rachel Phillis each scored 13 points for Trinity (15-4). Kelly Korpus added 10. Kotchman scored eight points in the fourth quarter and made six of seven free throw attempts. The Hillers were 10 of 11 from the line in the final quarter.

Diana Johnson hade a game-high 31 for the Hurricane (7-12).

McGuffey 80, Beth-Center 30: Sammy Weiss led a balanced scoring attack with 20 points as McGuffey wrapped up first place in Section 5-AA with an 80-30 win over Beth-Center.

Rachel Czulewicz added 15 points, Abby Pattison 12 and Cassie Weiss 10 for the Highlanders (9-0, 15-3).

Anna Bartman led Beth-Center (1-7, 3-11) with 19 points, 18 of which came on six three-pointers.

Washington 47, South Side Beaver 37: Taylor Ellis’ 15 points helped Washington clinch at least a tie for second place in Section 5-AA with a 47-37 win over South Side Beaver.

Mya Gordon added 11 points for the Prexies (8-2, 12-5).

Diane Seick led South Side Beave (6-4, 8-10) with 14 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 70, Mapletown 31: Jefferson-Morgan’s 33-point third quarter sparked the Rockets’ 70-31 win over Mapletown in Section 3-A play.

Jefferson-Morgan (3-4, 9-8) was led in scoring by Erin Confortini’s 15 points, Nicole Venick’s 14 points and Ally Bogden, who finished with 11. The Rockets led by just eight points at halftime before the big third quarter. Mapletown (0-7, 1-16) was paced by Abby Shipley’s 12 points.

Charleroi 64, Burgettstown 35: Mia Woytovich scored 15 points to lead Charleroi past Burgettstown, 64-45, in a 5-AA matchup.

The Cougars (7-4, 16-5) held a 12-point halftime lead before pulling away with the victory. Burgettstown (3-7, 6-13) was led by Sam Scopel, who finished with 12 points.

Avella 43, Carmichaels 34: Kenna Drazich and Kira Doaks combined for 23 points to lead Avella to a 43-34 victory over Carmichaels in Section 3-A play.

Doaks scored a team-high 12 points and Drazich added 11 for the Eagles (6-1, 13-6). A strong first-half, which ended with Avella leading by eight points, propelled the Eagles to the home win.

Carmichaels (2-6, 4-14) was led by Katie Reagan’s nine points.

Burgettstown 51, Western Beaver 13: Michaela Bertovich led a balanced offense with 10 points, and Burgettstown held Western Beaver scoreless in the first quarter, as the Blue Devils rolled to a 51-13 nonsection victory.

Burgettstown, which led 29-3 at halftime, improved its record to 6-12. The Blue Devils have won three of their last four.

Western Beaver is 0-19.

Thomas Jefferson 86, Ringgold 56: Four players reached double figures to send Thomas Jefferson to a 68-56 victory over Ringgold in a Section 4-AAA game.

Chase Winovich led the way for TJ (8-1, 16-2) with 19 points. Charlie Scharbo and Zack Good had 12 apiece and Eric Fairman chipped in 11.

Dayshore Majors led allscorers with 20 points and Dakota Browning added 12 for the Rams (1-8, 2-14).

Carmichaels 72, Clairton 63: Brandon Lawless had 22 points as Carmichaels pulled away at the end for a 72-63 Section 3-A win over Clairton.

Ty Cole added 17 points and Ty Aeschbacher chipped in 16 for the Mikes (5-1, 13-2), who outscored the Bears (3-2, 5-5) 20-11 in the final quarter.

Carmichaels made 24 of 35 free throws in the game, while Clairton was just 5 of 16 from the line.

Aaron Mathews had 15 points, while Jojuan Berry and Jaquan Ford had 14 each for Clairton.

Hempfield 72, Monessen 59: Kason Harrell poured in 30 points to propel Hempfield to a 72-59 nonsection victory over Monessen, snapping the Greyhounds’ nine-game winning streak.

Hunter Logan added 12 points and Mike Nauman 11 for the Spartans (16-2).

Justice Rawlins scored 18 points and Javon Brown 17 for Monessen (12-5).

South Fayette 80, Waynesburg 27: Brett Brumbaugh and Jack Relihan combined for 29 points to lift South Fayette to an 80-27 win over Waynesburg in Section 5-AAA play.

Brumbaugh had a team-high 16 points and Relihan added 13 to give the Lions (7-2, 10-5) their third straight section victory. South Fayette led 57-16 at halftime to enforce the mercy rule. Waynesburg (1-9, 4-14) was led by Corey Dispenza’s nine points.

Jefferson-Morgan 58, Frazier 52: Rece Henneman scored 30 points to propel Jefferson-Morgan past Frazier, 58-52, in a Section 5-AA matchup.

Henneman’s scoring output helped the Rockets (5-6, 8-10) overcome Frazier’s four double-digit scorers. Caleb Cox led the Commodores (7-2, 11-5) with 18 points and was joined by Charles Manack’s 10, Roger Cline’s 11 and Alvin Ross’ 13.

The win keeps the Rockets in the playoff picture and Henneman was joined in double-digit scoring by Christian Randolph, who had 10.
