J-M makes 14 3-pointers in win; C-M dealt loss

Jefferson-Morgan put on a long-range shooting display Friday night and moved to .500 in Section 5-AA with a 67-51 victory over host Bentworth.

The Rockets (6-6, 9-10) made 14 three-point field goals, with Austin Clark and Chas Mattish combining for 11 of the long-distance shots. Clark scored a game-high 20 points, including six three-pointers. Mattish followed with 19 points, including five three-pointers.

Rece Henneman scored 12 points for J-M, which made eight threes in the first half, which ended with the Rockets leading 34-20.

Jake Crockett scored 12 points to pace Bentworth (1-10, 1-15). Damon Bakos and T.J. Kurnutz each scored 11.

Moon 68, Canon-McMillan 55: Moon outscored Canon-McMillan 32-14 in the first half on their way to a 68-55 victory over the Big Macs in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Leading Moon (5-7, 7-12) was Mathew Kotvas, who scored a team-high 18 points, and Billy Lewis, who added 14 for the Tigers. Canon-McMillan was led by Sam Bohn’s 16 points and the loss, their third straight, muddies the playoff picture for the Big Macs (6-5, 8-10).

Canon-McMillan outscored Moon, 18-8, in the third quarter but surrendered 28 points in the fourth quarter to the Tigers. The Big Macs are just one game ahead of Peters Township for the final playoff spot in the section.

Upper St. Clair 49, Peters Township 42: Upper St. Clair led 31-30 after the third quarter when senior J.J. Conn hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers a four-point lead early in the final quarter. Upper St. Clair followed the clutch shot by hitting 11 of 13 free throws down the stretch to defeat Peters Township, 49-42, in a Section 4-AAAA matchup.

Conn led the Panthers (10-2, 14-5) with 19 points while Conor Gallagher and Nick Staley each added 11 points for first-place Upper St. Clair. Despite the defeat, Peters Township (6-6, 10-11) is stil alive in the WPIAL playoff picture. With Canon-McMillan and Mt. Lebanon losing Friday night, the Indians have a chance to sneak into the playoffs.

Peters Township was led in scoring by J.C. Brush, who had a team-high 16 points for the Indians.

Baldwin 68, Trinity 50: Baldwin used a huge advantage at the free-throw line to turn a close game after three quarters into a 68-50 victory over Trinity in Section 4-AAAA.

Baldwin (3-9, 4-15) trailed 26-24 at halftime and led by only 41-40 after three quarters. The Highlanders, however, increased their lead by scoring 27 fourth-quarter points, which much of the damage being done at the free-throw line. Baldwin made 23 of 29 free throws in the game compared to Trinity’s 9-for-17.

Jon DeGregorio scored a game-high 35 points for lead Baldwin. Arnes Bajgora had 13 points. The dup comebined to make 20 free throws.

Avery King scored scored 20 points to lead Trinity (0-10, 2-14), which made one more field goal than Baldwin. Nick Moretti had 11 points.

Carmichaels 55, Geibel 38:Brandon Lawless spent much of the night at the free-throw line and it helped Carmichaels pull out a 55-38 victory over visiting Geibel Catholic in Section 3-A.

Lawless scored a game-high 29 points, converting 16 of 22 free-throw attempts as second-place Carmichaels improved to 6-1 in the section and 14-2 overall. Ty Cole followed Lawless in the scoring column with 16 points for the Mikes, who led by only 26-20 at halftime.

James Ewing led Geibel (1-6, 2-13) with 11 points.

Ringgold 58, East Allegheny 50: Shakal Brooks scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the pivotal first half and Ringgold ended a seven-game losing streak with a 58-50 victory over host East Allegheny in Section 4-AAA.

Brooks and George Martin, who scored 15 points, helped Ringgold (2-8, 3-14) build a 32-21 halftime lead. The Rams then protected the advantage throughout the second half. Ringgold made 16 of 23 free throws in the game, including eight of 12 in the fourth quarter.

East Allegheny (0-10, 0-17) received 16 points from Isaiah Hampton and 15 from Justin Harner. The Wildcats made seven three-pointers.

Clairton 89, Avella 48: Avella played Clairton tough for a half, but the Bears pulled away over the final 16 minutes for an 89-48 victory in Section 3-A.

Clairton (4-2, 6-5) moved closer to clinching a WPIAL playoffs spot. The Bears led 16-12 after one quarter and 43-29 at halftime.

Aaron Matthews led four Clairton players in double figures with 18 points, followed by Isaiah Hollis with 17, Rashead Pacley with 12 and Jaques Ford with 11.

Brandon Miller and Cody Dobbins had solid offensive games for Avella (1-6, 3-14). Miller scored a team-high 17 points and Dobbins followed closely with 15.

Monessen 78, Mapletown 38: Three players reached double-digit points to lead Monessen to a 78-34 win over Mapletown in Section 3-A play.

Clintell Gillaspie led the Greyhounds (7-0, 13-5) with 18 points, while Tyler Yuille and Jade Altomore both added 14 points.

Monessen led 45-18 at halftime before sealing the win in the second half. The Greyhounds have won 10 of their past 11 games with their lone loss coming Thursday night against Class AAAA Hempfield. Mapletown (1-5, 5-10) was led by Dereck Riggleman, who scored a team-high 21 points.

Fort Cherry 66, Burgettstown 46: Fort Cherry’s 24-point fourth quarter carried the Rangers to a 66-46 win over Burgettstown in a Section 4-AA matchup. The win gives Fort Cherry a much-needed boost in the WPIAL playoff picture and control of its own fate.

Matt Haslin had a team-high 15 points for the Rangers (4-6, 8-9) and Phil Baker chipped in 11. Burgettstown (2-7, 4-15) was led by Dylan Dhans, who scored 12 points, and Logan Triebsch, who had a team-high 13 points for the Blue Devils.

South Fayette 71, McGuffey 42: Nick McKee and Justin Watson combined for 43 points to lift South Fayette to a 71-42 win over McGuffey in section 5-AAA play.

McKee had a team-high 23 points for the Lions (7-2, 10-5) and Watson added 20. South Fayette led 44-21 at halftime before pulling away with a 20-point third quarter.

McGuffey (0-8, 2-16) was led by Zach Maxwell’s 12 points and Damian McCloskey’s 11 points.

Avonworth 67, Chartiers-Houston 59: Three players scored in double digits and Avonworth used a strong first quarter to defeat Chartiers-Houston, 68-55, in a non-section game.

Leading the Antolopes (15-3) were Adam Joyce’s 15 points, Eric Gallupe’s team-high 18 points and Jamal Hughley’s 6-2-14. Despite Alec Ferrari fouling out with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Chartiers-Houston (12-5) had four double-digit scorers. AJ Myers had a team-high 13 points for the Bucs, while Ben Shade scored 10, Miles Williamson added 11 and Noah Deep finished with 12 points for Chartiers-Houston.

Despite the non-section loss, the Buccaneers are bound for the WPIAL playoffs after defeating Wash High Wednesday.

South Side Beaver 52, Beth-Center 28: Sammie Gibson scored 20 points to propel South Side Beaver past Beth-Center, 52-28, a Section 5-AA game.

Beth-Center (1-9, 3-13) was outscord 14-0 in the first quarter and only made six field goals in 32 minutes. Anna Bartman led the Bulldogs with 21 points – 15 of which came at the free-throw line.

The Rams (7-4, 9-10) have won five of their last six games and Casey Barber chipped in nine points in the section win.

Avella 49, Jefferson-Morgan 45: Avella outscored Jefferson-Morgan in the overtime period to clinch a 49-45 Section 3-A win over the Rockets.

Kenna Drazich led the Eagles (7-1, 14-6) with 28 points and hit 10 free throws. Second place Avella trailed by four at halftime before drawing even in the closing seconds of regularion.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-4, 9-9) was led by Erin Confortini’s 11 points and Jamie Lawrence, who added 10 points for the Rockets.

West Greene 55, Mapletown 28: The Raber sisters, Madison and Alyssa, combined for 40 points to help West Greene clinch a spot in the Class A playoffs with a 55-28 victory over Section 3-A rival Mapletown.

Madison scored a team-high 26 points for the Pioneers (4-3, 10-6), while Alyssa scored 14 and added 11 rebounds. West Greene built a 30-12 lead at halftime before sealing the victory with a 23-point second half performance.

Mapletown (6-8, 1-17) was led by Brook Duranko’s eight points.
