The Penguins announced Tuesday Sidney Crosby will not have surgery on his wrist.

PITTSBURGH – Despite reports last week to the contrary, the Pittsburgh Penguins say captain Sidney Crosby doesn’t need surgery on his injured wrist.

Crosby said last week he dealt with a wrist injury during the playoffs and was going to have surgery to repair the injury.

The Penguins announced Tuesday on Twitter that “after seeking additional medical advice, doctors have decided not to perform surgery on Sidney Crosby’s wrist. Sid will continue treatments and be evaluated regularly while he prepares for training camp in September.”

The NHL’s regular season scoring champion with 36 goals and 68 assists, the 26-year-old Crosby had just one goal and eight assists in 13 playoff games.

Crosby, who was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for his regular season performance, denied that he was playing with an injury several times during the playoffs.

The Penguins were eliminated in the second round as Crosby scored just three points in seven games against the New York Rangers.

General manager Ray Shero and head coach Dan Bylsma were both fired as a result of the playoff failure.
