Wild Things fall into tie for first place

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Evansville hit four home runs in the first four innings and overpowered the Wild Things, 9-3, Sunday night at Bosse Field in the first meeting of the season between the top two teams in the Frontier League’s East Division.
The loss dropped Washington (38-23) into a first-place tie with the Otters (37-22). Third-place Southern Illinois defeated Florence, 9-3, to close to within two games of first place. Washington and Evansville will conclude their three-game series tonight with a doubleheader.
John Schultz and Shayne Houck – two of Evansville’s first three batters – hit solo homers in the first inning off Washington starter Alex Kaminsky (2-5), who pitched only three innings, giving up seven hits and six runs.
Washington’s Danny Poma went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs with a single in the second inning that tied the score at 2-2. Evansville then scored the game’s next five runs with Wilson’s three-run homer capping the Otters’ four-run third inning. Chris Sweeney hit a solo homer with one out in the fourth.
The Wild Things scored their final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kresky.
Winning pitcher Taylor Dennis (2-1) pitched six innings and struck out six.
