Briefs: Waynesburg sends three to wrestling championships

For the second-straight season and third time in four years, Waynesburg’s wrestling team has three members representing the school at the Division III national wrestling championships.
Seniors Luke Lohr, Cameron Fine and Anthony Bonaventura all placed in the top three of their respective weight classes at Saturday’s NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships, to qualify for the national championships.
Lohr and Fine led the trio by reaching the championship bouts at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively. The lighter Yellow Jacket standout will be making a second-straight trip to nationals after improving on his third-place showing from last year by reaching the title bout at 149. The top-seeded veteran rode three-straight decisions, all with eight points scored ironically, to the title match against second-seeded Daniel Mirman of John Carroll.
Mirman managed to just slip past Lohr in a 4-3 contest, despite Lohr riding out his opponent and nearly turning him multiple times in the third period of their matchup. Bonaventura, the Yellow Jackets’ team captain, had to battle through the consolation rounds before winning four-straight matches to qualify.
Lohr, Bonaventura and Fine get two weeks to prepare for a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the national championships. The two-day event will be held on March 14 and 15.
California sophomore Alex Sagl went 3-1 last week at the Shaw Challenge and was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Sagl made four appearances – three starts – and finished with a 3-1 record and 1.75 ERA. She recorded 16 strikeouts over 20 innings pitched and limited opponents to a .174 batting average.
James Michael McAdoo hit the go-ahead shot in the lane with 3:09 left and Marcus Paige blocked Eric Atkins’ driving shot on the final play to seal No. 14 North Carolina’s 63-61 victory over Notre Dame on Monday night.
LeBron James scored a career-high 61 points, breaking Glen Rice’s franchise record, and the Miami Heat defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 124-107 on Monday night.
James made 22 of 33 shots from the field, including his first eight 3-point attempts. His career best had been 56 points, on March 20, 2005, for Cleveland against Toronto.
