The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team fell out of the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings, which were released on Wednesday evening.
The top-five teams in the regional rankings remained unchanged from last week. Gannon (25-2 overall, 23-2 in-region) maintained the top position for the second-straight week and Glenville State (24-3), the top seed in this weekend’s MEC Tournament, stayed in second place. Edinboro (21-5) and Bloomsburg (23-3) remained third and fourth, respectively, while Virginia State (22-2, 21-2) stayed fifth despite losing in the semifinals of the CIAA Tournament last weekend.
Shaw (20-8, 19-8) moved up two positions to sixth after claiming the automatic bid from the CIAA by winning a fourth-consecutive league title. West Liberty (17-9) also jumped two places to seventh and Fairmont State (16-9) made its debut in the regional rankings at eighth. Fayetteville State (19-7) remained in ninth position after falling in the CIAA Championship last weekend, while Charleston (W.Va.) (19-7) moved into the regional rankings this week at No. 10.
California University of Pennsylvania guard Miki Glenn was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Freshman of the Year on Wednesday.
Glenn became the first California player to receive the award since forward Kayla Smith in 2009, and the fourth overall since 2002. She ranks third on the team in scoring at 10.0 points per game. Glenn has posted five 20-point games, including a 28-point effort at Shippensburg Jan. 3.
A 5-7 guard, Glenn leads the team with 2.6 assists per game and is tied for third on the team with 1.6 steals per game. She has collected at least five assists in six games with a season high of eight assists at IUP on Jan. 18.
Bloomsburg’s Catherine Noack was named PSAC East Athlete of the Year, while Edinboro’s Valerie Majewski’s won the honor for the West.
Edinboro’s Stan Swank and Bloomsburg’s Bill Cleary were honored as their respective division’s PSAC Coach of the Year.
Hammered to 1-5 in the wagering, G Momma justified the support when she rolled first over to victory in the fastest division of Wednesday’s opening leg of the Mary Wohlmuth Memorial Trot at The Meadows.
Hierarchy and Glams K took the other $15,000 splits of the Wohlmuth, a series for 3- and 4-year-old trotting fillies and mares that honors the memory of the late Mary Wohlmuth, longtime manager of The Meadows’ 2:00 Club. Mike Wilder enjoyed a Wohlmuth double behind G Momma and Hierarchy.
Round 1 in the fight over pace of play in college football goes to those who have the need for speed.
The NCAA football rules committee tabled a proposal Wednesday that would penalize offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play clock.
After a conference call, the committee decided not to send the so-called 10-second rule to the playing rules oversight panel for approval today.
Tyler Cavanaugh scored a career-high 20 points and Wake Forest pulled away to upset No. 4 Duke 82-72 on Wednesday night.
Travis McKie added 19 points in his final scheduled home game for the Demon Deacons.
• Russ Smith scored 22 of his 26 points after halftime, including six 3-pointers, and No. 11 Louisville became the first opponent to win in SMU’s renovated home, beating the 18th-ranked Mustangs 84-71.
• Shabazz Napier scored 26 points in his final home game, leading 19th-ranked UConn to a 69-63 win over Rutgers.
Tyler Bozak scored on a penalty shot and then got the winning goal 1:51 into overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday night, spoiling the New York debut of Martin St. Louis.
