California University split a doubleheader against Salem International Monday at Consol Energy Park. The Vulcans won the opener, 10-6, before losing the nightcap, 2-1.
The Vulcans’ record moves to 4-5. They have split all four of their doubleheaders. Salem International is 1-11.
In the opener, Cal set season highs with 10 runs and six stolen bases and tied its season high with 11 hits. Senior center fielder Ben Carson, junior shortstop Matt peters and sophomore third baseman Mick Fennell each had two hits. Sophomore designated hitter David Marcus drove in two runs.
Winning pitcher Justin Taylor (2-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in five innings.
Salem’s Charles Atherton pitched a five-hitter and the Tigers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win the second game. Cal’s Jack Dennis pitched a complete-game five-hitter. David Marcus doubled and drove in the Vulcans’ only run.
• Juniata swept a doubleheader from Waynesburg, 8-4 and 6-1, at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla., the former spring training home of the Detroit Tigers.
The Yellow Jackets’ record dropped to 2-5.
Waynesburg led 4-1 after two innings in the opener but couldn’t protect the lead as Juniata (3-7) scored three times in both the third and fifth innings. Jordan Tuscott had a two-run single for the Yellow Jackets.
Two Juniata pitchers combined on a five-hitter in the second game. Losing pitcher Connor Furwa and reliever Tyler Prevost allowed only six Juniata hits. Matt Bensinger went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in the Yellow Jackets’ lone run.
