West Greene outlasts Monessen in 10 innings

Sophomore pitcher Bailey Bennington threw a one-hit shutout over 10 innings, striking 22, and hit a two-run single as West Greene outlasted host Monessen 6-0 Friday in a Section 2-A game.
Bennington walked only one batter and allowed just a sixth-inning bunt single by Lauren Perry, the No. 9 hitter in Monessen’s lineup. Perry also robbed Bennington of extra bases with a running catch on a deep fly ball.
West Greene (2-0, 2-2) finally broke the scoreless tie in the 10th. Alyssa Raber began the inning on second base via the international tiebreaker rule and advanced to third on a bunt by Marissa Rose. Monessen made a throw to third base in an attempt to get Raber but the throw was late. When nobody covered second base, Rose advanced and Raber raced home with the game’s first run.
A bunt single by Hannah Reed and walk loaded the bases before Bennington broke open the game with a two-run single. Bennington was 2-for-4 with a walk.
Shelby Minardi pitched a fine game for Monessen (1-1, 1-2), allowing only eight hits and striking out seven.
• Winning pitcher Erica Burns struck out 11 and went 4-for-5 to help Carmichaels to an 8-6 victory over Serra Catholic in Section 2-A.
Carmichaels (1-1, 3-1) won despite committing seven errors. Mia Virgili went 4-for-4 with two RBI for the Mikes, and Caroline Cree had a double and drove in two runs.
Amy McNeil hit a home run, and losing pitcher Whitney Larko and Gia Husnick doubled for Serra (1-2, 1-2).
• Charleroi’s lineup produced 20 hits, including 11 for extra bases, as the Cougars rolled to a 23-8 victory over host Brentwood in the Section 4-AA opener.
Morgan Riley led the offense for Charleroi (1-0, 3-0) by going 4-for-6 with three doubles. Jordan Swarmer was 3-for-6 with three doubles, winning pitcher Anjie Tilghman had three hits including a double, Sydney Toth hit two triples, and Lynsey Wright, Kaitlyn McCann and Carina Gottheld each doubled.
Brentwood is 0-1 in section and 0-2 overall.
• Cassie Weiss struck out 13 batters and smacked a double to help McGuffey to a 9-1 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 2-AA game.
Sammie Weiss, Marlie Mounts, Carae Wagner and Mariah McGuire each had a double for McGuffey (1-1, 4-1).
Hannah Gibbons tripled for Waynesburg (1-1, 1-2).
• Chase Watson and Aubree Yates combined to go 7-for-7 and account for eight runs in Bentworth’s 15-0, four-inning win over Washington in a Section 2-AA game.
Watson hit a three-run home run and drove in four for the Bearcats (2-0, 3-3). Yates had a solo home run among her three hits and scored four times.
Morgan Bainer had a single in the third for the only hit for Wash High (0-1, 0-2).
• Canon-McMillan rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and scored the next 18 runs in an 18-3 victory over Brashear in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Linda Rush had a double and three-run home run for the Big Macs (2-0, 2-0). Kaylee Gohring doubled and knocked in three runs. Giorgiana Zeremenko went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Abby McCartney and Ashley Buggy each had a double and Brittney Crawford a triple.
Brashear fell to 1-1 in the section and overall.
• Morgan Ellek threw a one-hit shutout as Burgettstown defeated visiting North Catholic 10-0 in a five-inning Section 1-A game.
Kate Tarr doubled and drove in three runs for Burgettstown (1-0, 3-2). Bry Lonick also had a double.
The only hit for North Catholic (0-1, 0-1) was a single three batters into the game. Ellek struck out six and walked only one.
• Beth-Center took advantage of 21 walks by Fort Cherry in an 11-5 victory in a Section 2-AA game.
Torin Fisher, Jasmin Wadworth and Alayna Mickoloff each scored two runs for the Bulldogs (2-0, 3-1). Abby Gusovich had eight strikeouts and no walks.
Rachael sturgeon had a triple for Fort Cherry (0-2, 0-2).
