Baseball: Nogay, O’Neill help Presidents sweep Grove City

Eddie Nogay faced the minimum through five innings and moved into a second-place tie for career pitching wins at Washington & Jefferson after the Presidents defeated Grove City College 5-2 in the first game of a PAC baseball doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout in game two behind a two-hit shutout from Brian O’Neill. O’Neill came within two outs of tossing the first no-hitter in Presidents’ recent history.
Nogay notched his ninth career complete game to improve to 25-2 in his career. The 25 victories tied Dave Trushel for second place in W&J history, only one behind career victory leader Sam Mann. Nogay limited the Wolverines (4-9, 2-2 PAC) to two unearned runs – both scored during the sixth inning – on five hits, while striking out a pair. He issued one walk.
Kyle Smith homered and drove in three runs for the Presidents (9-7, 4-1 PAC) and Ron Peirish had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
In the second game, O’Neill allowed just two hits and struck out eight. Josh Staniscia drove in two runs and Derick Helbing scored twice.
• Slippery Rock swept a PSAC West Division doubleheader from visiting California, 5-3 and 8-7, Monday.
The losses drop the Vulcans to 2-6 in the division and 13-11 overall. The Rock is 5-3, 16-8.
Cal’s David Marcus was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the opener.
Slippery Rock scored six runs in the second inning of the nightcap, and broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Derrik Zeroski was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs for the Vulcans.
• Waynesburg University split a seven-inning doubleheader at Saint Vincent College, taking Game 1 6-5 and falling 6-2 in Game 2. The split allowed the Yellow Jackets to win the three-game season series against the Bearcats 2-1.
In the first game, Jonathan Kletzli went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Yellow Jackets (6-12, 2-1) and Marc Timmons drove in two runs. Eric crum scored twice and Clay Roman had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
In the second game, six different players scored and four players had one RBI each for Saint Vincent (7-11, 2-3).
Kletzli had two hits and two RBI for Waynesburg.
