Tyler Schmidt pitched 3 1/3 innings of stellar relief and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning Monday as Peters Township rallied to beat previously undefeated Fox Chapel, 6-4, in a non-section game on the Foxes’ home field.
Peters Township (2-2) led 2-0 in the fifth inning, when Fox Chapel (3-1) scored four runs on only one hit. The Foxes benefitted from three walks and an error in the inning.
PT, however, rallied and scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie. Frank Jezioro, who was 2-for-4, started the comeback with a single. Two walks and a hit batsman forced in a run that cut Fox Chapel’s lead to 4-3. Phil Pisarcik then hit a sacrifice fly that tied the score.
In the top of the eighth, Schmidt singled and scored when Mitch Bianco doubled. Jezioro then singled for his second hit in as many innings, putting runners on first and third and setting up Brett McIntosh’s single that drove in Bianco with an insurance run.
Schmidt was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and not walking a batter.
• Matt Szerson recorded eight strikeouts and pitched a complete game to lead Charleroi to a 1-0 Section 2-AA win over Bentworth.
The Cougars (1-0, 2-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bentworth’s center fielder dropped a fly ball that allowed a runner to score. From there Szerson took over, allowing just two hits in seven innings to earn the win.
The Bearcats (0-1, 3-1) had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but starting pitcher Jake Rothka struck out to end the game.
