California University has signed five players, including three freshman and two transfers, for the upcoming women’s basketball season.
“We are really excited to welcome the 2014-2015 recruiting class to Cal U,” head coach Jess Strom said. “We are looking for the five student-athletes joining our program to make an immediate impact. I feel that we have added athleticism to our team, as well as some depth for next season and years to come.
The five players are Seairra Barrett, a 6-0 forward from Central valley High School; Morgan Jennings, a 5-11 guard/forward from Hollidaysburg; Shatara Parsons, a 6-0 center from Central Dauphin, Brittany Nelson, a 5-10 forward from Lackawanna Community College; and Paige Wright, a 5-11 guard/forward from Owens Community College.
Barrett was a second team all-state selection after averaging 24.5 points per game as a senior. She’s a 1,000-point career scorer.
“I’m very excited to coach someone like Seairra,” Strom said. “She is going to bring an energy and excitement to the floor for us the next four years.”
Jennings was a member of Hollidaysburg’s District 6 championship team.
“Morgan is a player who can do many things. She can play multiple positions on the floor and her versatility should help us right away,” Strom said.
Parsons averaged 11.8 points per game as a senior and 14.6 as a junior. Nelson also played at Central Daughin prior to attending Lackawanna, where she was a third-team junior college All-American, averaging 15.3 points and 15.7 rebounds per game. She ranked fourth nationally in rebounding.
“Brittany and Shatara bring us depth in our post position, athleticism and outstanding rebounding,” Strom said.
Wright averaged 10.2 points and 6 rebounds at Owens and ranked 16th in the junior college ranks with 5.4 assists per game. She shot 37 percent from three-point range.
“With the addition of Paige, we have added a three-point shooting threat,” Strom said. “She also brings an all-around offensive game and two years of college basketball experience.”
