Softball: Carmichaels earns section tie with Jeff-Morgan

Carmichaels won a pair of games Tuesday, beating Frazier, 6-1, and Mapletown, 16-0, in four innings, to clinch a tie with Jefferson-Morgan for first place in Section 1-A.
Erica Burns threw a two-hitter in the opener for the Mikes (12-2, 14-3), who clinched their eighth section title in a row, then followed that up with a no-hitter against Mapletown.
Kaylee Boosel tripled and Amanda Brown and Chelsea McCann both doubled for Carmichaels in the opener. Frazier fell to 9-4, 9-5.
Burns homered and doubled against Mapletown (2-12, 2-13), and Katie Mays and Natalie McNett each tripled and doubled. Boosel and McCann also had doubled against the Maples.
• Haley Sutton went 4-for-5, drove in seven runs and hit for the cycle as Chartiers-Houston picked up a crucial 8-6 victory over McGuffey in Section 2-AA.
Sutton had a game-winning three-run double in the top of the 10th inning.
The Bucs (7-4, 9-6) remained in a tie for third place with Bentworth. Kassie Kesneck was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits.
Megan Shultz doubled, while Cassie Weiss took the loss for McGuffey (8-3, 12-3), which lost a chance to pull into a tie for first place in the section with Waynesburg.
• Chase Watson hit one of Bentworth’s four home runs and also doubled as the Bearcats kept pace with Chartiers-Houston for the third playoff spot in Section 2-AA with an 8-1 win over Beth-Center.
Jame Schrock, Alicia Shlutz and Aubree Yates also homered for the Bearcats (7-4, 10-8), while Casey Hite earned the win.
Beth-Center (6-6, 6-9) was elminated from playoff contention.
• Alayna Ammon threw a three-inning one-hitter as Washington defeated Fort Cherry, 16-0, in a Section 2-AA game.
Taylor Ellis doubled for Washington (2-9, 3-10).
Bailey Dunks had the lone hit for Fort Cherry (0-11, 0-14).
• Allie Taylor had a pair of doubles as Serra Catholic remained alive for the third playoff spot in Section 2-A with a 12-2 five-inning win over West Greene.
Witney Larko was the winning pitcher for Serra (8-5, 9-5), which can move into a tie with Frazier for the third playoff spot with a win over the Commodores today.
Marissa Rode doubled for West Greene (6-8, 7-11).
• Carly Konopka threw a four-hitter as Peters Township remained alive for a playoff spot in Section 4-AAAA with a 4-2 win over Chartiers Valley.
Konopka also doubled, and Lindsay McKnight tripled for Peters Township (9-4, 9-7), which trails Bethel Park by a half game in the section standings. The Indians need a win today against section leader Canon-McMillan to secure a playoff berth.
The loss elminates Chartiers Valley (9-5, 9-5) from playoff contention.
With the recent heavy rains that have inundated the area, the WPIAL has extended the deadline to Saturday for when high school baseball and softball regular seasons must be completed.
The WPIAL softball committee will meet Thursday to decide pairings for next week’s playoff schedule, and the baseball committee will meet Friday, though teams have until the end of the week to complete their section schedules.
Champion Washington & Jefferson had five players named to the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s softball team, and Waynesburg had one player selected in the voting that was announced Tuesday.
W&J head coach Nicole Vitello won the Coach of the Year award for the second time after leading the Presidents to a 25-10 record. Waynesburg won the team sportsmanship award.
Senior Kelsey Cunningham, a Peters Township graduate, sophomore pitcher Krista McCartney and senior utility player Madison Rotto were named first team for the Presidents, and senior outfielder Jasmine Blackwell earned first-team honors for Waynesburg.
Peters Township graduate Abby Cunningham, a freshman catcher, and junior second baseman Jen Bahm were named to the second team.
Shortstop Ana Walter of Thomas More was named player of the year.
Mia Tortchita scored a tiebreaking goal with 45 seconds remaining Tuesday night to give Seton-LaSalle a 13-12 victory over Peters Township.
Gina Vilsack scored five goals, including the 100th of her high school career, and added an assist for Peters Township (7-3, 10-4). Allison Hurley also had a big game of the Indians, scoring five goals and contributing three assists.
