Weiss strikes out 13 in McGuffey victory

McGuffey senior Cassie Weiss continued her impressive season with Bentworth being the latest victim. The right-handed pitcher struck out 12 and allowed just three hits to lead the Highlanders past Bentworth, 6-2, in Section 2-AA.
Sammie Weiss had three singles and two RBI; and Marlie Mounts hit a triple for McGuffey (9-3, 13-3). The Bearcats scored two runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as Casey Hite took the loss for Bentworth (7-5, 10-9).
•Bailey Bennington struck out nine and drove in three runs to propel West Greene to a 15-0 win over Geibel Catholic in a non-section game.
Bennington went 3-for-4 and allowed just one hit in four innings to lead the Pioneers (8-11) to victory. She also added a double and triple to drive in three runs. Alyssa Raber hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to end the game.
Karley Judy took the loss for Geibel (1-1).
• Linda Rush hit a grand slam and Tara Fowler earned the victory as Canon-McMillan defeated Peters Township, 12-0, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Rush added a double and drove in six runs for the Big Macs (12-2, 16-3). Olivia Lorusso, Giorgiana Zeremenko and Taylor Bruno added doubles for Canon-McMillan. Kellyn Perich took the loss for Peters Township (9-5, 9-8).
• Tara Staley hit a home run and Jordan Moore earned the victory as Waynesburg defeated Belle Vernon, 7-6, in a non-section game.
Hannah Gibbons added a triple for the Raiders (10-2, 12-8) and Moore struck out two in the win. Belle Vernon (5-12) committed four errors and scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Waynesburg’s three-run seventh allowed the Raiders to hold on.
