FOX CHAPEL – Dom Chiera pitched a four-hitter and Deer Lakes scored six runs after two outs in the third inning as the Lancers defeated Chartiers-Houston, 6-1, Friday in a WPIAL Class AA first-round baseball playoff game at Fox Chapel High School.
Deer Lakes (15-4) took advantage of some uncharacteristic wildness by C-H starting pitcher Alec Ferrari. The Lancers loaded the bases with two outs in the third, then scored the game’s first run on a walk, one of six issued by Ferrari in three innings.
Before the third inning would end, Deer Lakes would take a 6-0 lead as John Carmprobst and Matt Olesnevich each produced two-run singles.
C-H (11-6) got one of the runs back in the fifth inning, when Tyler Day singled and eventually came around to score when Troy Whitfield grounded out.
The Bucs, however, couldn’t generate enough offense to mount a comeback against the left-handed Chiera, who did not issue a walk and struck out three. Deer Lakes also did not commit an error.
