BEN AVON – Kevin Simpson had 15 carries for 108 yard and a pair of touchdowns as Avonworth stopped Mapletown, 34-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL Class A high school football playoffs Friday night.

Simpson’s touchdown runs both came in the first half as the Antelopes (9-1), the second-place finisher in the Black Hills Conference led just 14-0 at the half.

But Brandon Wasko put Avonworth ahead, 20-0 in the third quarter with a touchdown run, and the Antelopes put the pesky Maples, who were making their first playoff appearance since 2005, away in the fourth quarter with two more scores, a touchdown run by James Busbee and a 34-yard pass late in the game by Alex Osborne to J.J. Igims.

Mapletown (7-3), the third-place finisher in the Tri-County South, got 42 yards rushing from Dylan Rush, who went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Rush finishes with 1,018 yards.

Adam Hein recorded 10 tackles for the Maples.
