Defending state champion North Catholic tops Avella

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP – P.J. Fulmore scored five first-half touchdowns and gained 111 yards on seven carries as top-seeded North Catholic ousted Avella from the WPIAL Class A playoffs with a 69-13 victory.

Fulmore scored on a 76-yard pass from Adam Sharlow, who threw for 120 yards, as North Catholic (10-0), the defending state champions, ran its winning streak to 26 games, matching South Fayette for the longest current streak in the WPIAL.

Mario Latronica added 119 yards and three touchdowns on six carries for North Catholic, which led 63-0 at the half.

Nick Kusich had 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 16 carries for Avella (5-5), which was making its second consecutive trip to the postseason.

Kusich’s yardage total put him at 1,113 for the season, breaking Matt Hurney’s single-season school record.

Santino Paris completed 7 of 20 passes for 96 yards for the Eagles.
