WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A.J. Hammons scored 15 points to lead Purdue to an 89-52 victory over California University in a men’s basketball exhibition game Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 10,179 at Mackey Arena.
The game was the first of two exhibitions for the Vulcans against NCAA Division I opponents. Cal will play Friday night at Virginia Commonwealth.
Purdue, which retuns three starters from a 15-17 team last year and is coached by former Washington & Jefferson assistant Matt Painter, forged a 50-22 lead at halftime and held the Vulcans to just 29 percent shooting for the game.
Junior transfer Khalil Jabbie and sophomore Drew Cook led Cal with 10 points each. Junior transfer Richard Smith grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Vulcans opened the game on a 7-2 run before the Boilermakers made their initial field goal with 16:49 left in the first half. Purdue then seized control of the game with a 35-2 run to take a 35-9 as Cal was limited to only one field goal for more than nine minutes.
