Haley has home in hall of fame
Bob Haley, a Midway native and 1965 Fort Cherry High School graduate, was recently inducted into the Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Haley was a longtime assistant football coach at Shepherd and at California University. He served as Shephered’s defensive coordinator for 11 seasons (2000-10) after joining the Rams’ coaching staff in 1997. During Haley’s tenure at the Shepherdstown, W.Va., school, the Rams won seven conference titles and made the NCAA Division II playoffs five times. In 2005, his defense led the nation in pass efficiency and his 2006 squad was No. 1 in scoring defense, posting six shutouts. Haley’s defenses at Shepherd led the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in rushing defense five times and total defense four times.
Before joining the coaching staff at Shepherd, Haley was an assistant for 14 years at California, including the final 10 as defensive coordinator. Haley coached 12 Cal players to All-PSAC status during his final four years and helped the Vulcans to the 1984 conference championship as Cal defeated Bloomsburg in the State Game. Haley’s defense held the Huskies to only 33 passing yards passing and minus-18 rushing yards in the second half of Cal’s 21-14 victory.
Haley also was the defensive coordinator at Ringgold High School for four years.
A two-year starter as a defensive back at the University of Maryland, Haley had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Darby Kern of Venetia is the leading scorer for the Penn State women’s team. Kern, a junior right winger, has nine goals and seven assists in seven games.
Kern scored three goals in a 9-0 victory over Navy and tallied the game-winning goal in overtime during a 5-4 victory over Vermont.
Austin Hancock, a senior linebacker at Fordham, was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Oct. 11 in the Rams’ 60-22 victory over Penn.
A McMurray native and Peters Township graduate, Hancock (6-2, 233) tied his career-high with 12 tackles, including eight solo. He was credited with 2½ tackles for losses and had two quarterback sacks. One of the sacks forced a fumble that was recovered by Fordham and returned for a touchdown.
Hancock is the leading tackler for Fordham, which has an 8-1 record and has won seven in a row. For the season, Hancock has 52 tackles and 2½ sacks.
Cooper Schroeder, a sophomore tight end from Canonsburg, is having a big season for Alderson-Broaddus.
The Canon-McMillan graduate is the leading receiver for A-B with 46 receptions for 603 yards and seven touchdowns. Schroeder has had two games of nine receptions and 95 yards, and caught eight passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns in the Battlers’ 47-7 win over Chowan in September.
Justin Watson, a wide receiver from Bridgeville and a South Fayette graduate, is making an impact as a freshman for the University of Pennsylvania. Watson, who played on the Lions’ PIAA Class AA championship team last season, is Penn’s third-leading receiver with 24 receptions for 282 yards in seven games.
Watson caught his first career touchdown pass, a 22-yarder, Saturday in the Quakers’ 21-13 loss to Brown. He had six receptions in the game and has multiple receptions in every game in which he has played.
Two former Trinity standouts are starters on West Virginia’s women’s soccer team that is ranked No. 8 nationally and recently won the Big 12 regular-season championship.
Amanda Hill, a junior midifielder, and Maggie Bedillion, a junior defender, have played in all 18 games for the Mountaineers (14-2-2).
Bedillion has scored three goals and assisted on another. Her 231 shooting percentage is the best on the team of any player with at least 13 shots.
Hill has scored two goals and has two assists. Hill has started every game of her career with the Mountaineers. She is one of WVU’s team captains and is the first non-senior to serve in that role since 2011.
West Virginia, which has a 15-match unbeaten streak, opens the Big 12 tournament this afternoon against TCU.
Emily Rohanna of Waynesburg helped Youngstown State to the team championship at the Clarion Invitational.
YSU golfers swept the top four spots in the event and cruised to a 30-stroke victory. Rohanna, a junior, was consistent over two rounds, shooting scores of 80 and each day top finish fourth overall in a field of 49 golfers. She was seven shots behind teammate Allison Mitzel, who finished in first place.
Jake Pletz, a senior from Venetia, has been named one of three captains for the Westminster men’s team.
Pletz has helped Westminster to a 2-0 start by winning the 500 freestyle in the Titans’ 160-109 victory over Bethany.
